Snyder and Habermas on the war in Ukraine: A critical discourse analysis of elite media discourse in Germany
This article presents a critical qualitative study of two opinion articles, written by two eminent scholars (Jrgen Habermas and Timothy Snyder), on the German government's hesitant arms supply for Ukraine during the first phase of the Russian war of aggression in 2022.The main aim of the article is the uncovering of the discursive practices of critique performed by two major public intellectuals. This case study thus allows insights into the simpl…
“Secret Service Plot” or “Drunken Night”? Accounting Strategies in a Resignation Speech and Their Uptake in Media Reports in Three Countries
In this article, former Austrian vice-chancellor’s H.C. Strache’s resignation speech and its media coverage in Austria, Germany, and the German speaking part of Switzerland are investigated. Strache resigned after the publication of a secretly recorded meeting with an alleged Russian oligarch during which he (and his closest political collaborator) discussed illegal ways of party funding. The analysis shows that Strache applies justifications (pr…
When invoked voices blame real politicians: Confrontational blaming in a speech from Austria’s “commemorative year” 2018
This case study analyses the socio-pragmatic effects of invoked multiple voices in a commemorative speech delivered by Austrian writer Michael Köhlmeier on the occasion of the 2018 Austrian commemoration day against violence and fascism. Köhlmeier uses different forms of discourse representation to blame politicians of the then Austrian government for their political statements and actions. The focus of this article is on the speaker’s combinatio…
Political language and textual vagueness
It is common sense to say that vagueness is a characteristic of political language. However, to make the concept of vagueness relevant for linguistic analysis it has to be formulated in terms of a pragmalinguistic theory. According to the literature on political language vagueness occurs most often in the area of (party)political

Staged conflicts in Austrian parliamentary debates
This paper analyzes the rhetorical formats used by Austrian members of parliament (MPs) to express disagreement with previous speakers during the so-called ‘inaugural speech debates’. During these debates, MPs position themselves publicly as either government or opposition party representatives. Disagreeing with previous debate contributions represents a positioning practice that focuses on the interpersonal plane of interaction. The strict proce…
Debating or displaying political positions: MPs’ reactive statements during the inaugural speech debates in the Austrian parliament
This paper investigates the reference statements and rhetorical functions of politicians’ reactive (“uptaking”) statements in parliamentary debates as well as their self-positioning effects. Uptaking moves may be used by speakers for pursuing strategic, global discourse aims. The specific properties of such ‘uptaking’ utterances and their sequential embedding in the unfolding discourse provide analysts with cues of speakers’ global interactional …

Policy-oriented argumentation or ironic evaluation: A study of verbal quoting and positioning in Austrian politicians’ parliamentary debate contributions
This article explores the different uses of forms of direct verbal quotes (whole clauses, word groups, or single words/phrases) in follow-up utterances delivered during the parliamentary debates after the inaugural speech of a new chancellor in the Austrian parliament and investigates their positioning effects for members of parliament (MPs) who have the first opportunity of publicly ‘doing being a government or opposition MP’ in the new legislat…

Backmatter
Introduction: Approaches to Genre
This volume is based on a panel that Peter Muntigl, Helmut Gruber and Eija Ventola organized for the 8th International Pragmatics Association Conference in Toronto, July 2003. The panel was entitled “Approaches to Genre” and had aimed at bringing together scholars from different backgrounds in genre research in order to initiate a critical dialogue. Mostly due to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding this IPRA conference (the SARS crisis that…

The “conversation on Austria: A televised representation of Austria’s internal condition after the national-conservative “Wende
In February 2000, the Austrian Christian conservative People’s Party ÖVP and the right wing nationalist Freedom Party (under its notorious leader Jörg Haider) formed a new government in Austria. This political change resulted not only in heavy political protests in Austria, but also caused bilateral sanctions of the other 14 EU member states against the new government. In March 2000, Austria’s public broadcasting company organised a media discuss…

Women and Socialism - Socialism and Women: Europe between the two World Wars
Until recently, histories of women tended to be segregated from the larger historical context. This pioneering volume places the role of women within the history of the interwar years, whenboth the women's and socialist movements became prominent, and raises the key question of how power was distributed between the genders in a historical setting. The emblematic title of this volume highlights the fundamental conception of this comparative study …

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: Neither Crisis Nor Stasis
Linking the fate of labor and working-class history to the temporal fortunes of socialist parties or the collapse of the communist system seems to reduce history to a very meager function. It suggests that labor has somehow lost importance or interest as a historical subject because the political parties and movements which claimed to speak in its name have experienced drastic reversals or other profound changes.Apparently historians have periodi…

Willi Münzenberg: Propagandist for and against the Comintern
Brief notices in French newpsapers of October 22, 1940 announcing the death of Willi Münzenberg failed to attract the attention of the international press occupied with reporting the progress of the Second World War. Münzenberg's body had been discovered in the woods of Cagnet in Southwestern France with a wire garrote around the neck. The cause and macabre circumstances of death were shrouded in mystery. More than twenty years have blurred and o…

Sexuality in “Red Vienna”: Socialist Party Conceptions and Programs and Working-Class Life, 1920–34
The study of the place of sexuality in working-class culture is still in its infancy. The most noteworthy investigations stop short at the threshold of the twentieth century, on the eve of full-fledged industrialization. The sparseness of data on all periods has made sexuality a particularly intractable subject. The reticence of both memoirists and oral history subjects to reveal the most intimate aspects of their private sphere has forced histor…

The Political-Ethical Mission of German Expressionism
Today, the public, following the lead of literary critics and historians, has consigned the writer to a stylistic and personal Erewhon from which he rarely ventures. In our age of experts, says Walter Sokel, we recognize the writer as an expert too, but only as an expert for the fabrication of linguistic patterns. The present day writer must well look back with uncomprehending amazement to the arrogance which made the Expressionist hurl maledicti…
