  • Characteristics of Factors Influencing the Occurrence of Cleft Lip and/or Palate

    Open Access•Małgorzata Kulesa-Mrowiecka, A Lipowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

Our findings suggest that children with parents who have a history of clefts and those with less educated mothers are more likely to develop bilateral cleft palates. Additionally, children born to mothers experiencing stress during pregnancy face an increased risk of bilateral cleft palates. It is important to note that there is a paucity of literature on rehabilitation following various cleft palate surgical techniques in children

  • Scoliotic posture and biological age measured by pubertal growth spurt in adolescent boys and girls

0.01), a greater difference in the height of lower scapular anles, and a worse score on the finger-to-floor test. In conclusion, scoliometer testing should be permanently incorporated into periodic body measurements at school, especially among 10- to 12-year-old children who are at higher risk for scoliosis progression. Equations for assessing biological age, although associated with an error, appear to be easy to use and useful in screening for …

  • Relationship between body sway and body build in healthy adult men and women

    Open Access•A Lipowicz, Monika N Bugdol et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2023•References: 37

Studies investigating the relationship between balance ability and body size, build and proportions tend to concentrate on body mass and height rather than breadth parameters or size of individual body segments. The purpose of this study was to determine a relationship between the ability to keep balance and the size, build and proportions, based on breadth and length dimensions of the body in healthy adult men and women during a position of free…

  • Assessment of the obesity based on voice perception

    Open Access•Łukasz Pawelec, Karolina Kierczak et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2023•References: 52

Human voice is an extremely important biological signal which contains information about sex, age, emotional state, health and physical features of a speaker. Estimating a physical appearance from a vocal cue can be an important asset for sciences including forensics and dietetics. Although there have been several studies focused on the relationships between vocal parameters and ratings of height, weight, age and musculature of a speaker, to our …

  • The impact of cigarette smoking on the quality of sleep in Polish men

    Open Access•Agnieszka Witek, A Lipowicz•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2021•References: 35

Quality of sleep directly impacts quality of life, whilst lifestyle significantly impacts night rest. Cigarette smoking is a serious threat to overall health, including sleep. Nicotine in cigarettes affects the nervous system, whilst the respiratory system is impacted by carcinogenic substances, such as dusts and tarred substances, inhaled with smoke. Cigarettes are assumed to be a risk factor in sleep disorders, including breathing sleep disorde…

    Monika Lopuszanska, Monika Lopuszanska-Dawid et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2015

BACKGROUND: In some epidemiological studies, self-reported height and weight are often used to save time and money. Self-reported height and weight are commonly used to assess the prevalence of obesity. The aim of this study was to assess the differences between self-reported and measured height and weight in adult men, and to determine how the accuracy of self-reported data depended on age and education. The prevalence of obesity was also calcul…

Open Access•A Lipowicz, Alicja Szklarska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2014

This study considers the relationship between a cumulative index of biological dysregulation (allostatic load) and several dimensions of socioeconomic status (SES) and lifestyle in adult Polish males. The extent to which lifestyle variables can explain SES variation in allostatic load was also evaluated. Participants were 3887 occupationally active men aged 25–60 years living in cities and villages in the Silesia region of Poland. The allostatic …

  • Inter-Generation Social Mobility Modifies Framingham Risk Score in Polish Middle-Aged Men, but Not in Women

Open Access•Ewa A Jankowska, Alicja Szklarska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2008

In modern societies, there are regular social gradients in most health parameters, and also in the structure of morbidity and mortality. However, the significance of inter-generation social mobility for general health status still remains equivocal. This study was therefore performed in order to compare the effect of social mobility on coronary heart disease (CHD) risk between middle-aged Polish men and women. A total of 342 men and 458 women, ag…

  • Biological fitness at middle-age is reduced in both very lean and obese males

    Open Access•A Lipowicz•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2003•Cited by: 1

It is a well-documented fact that the relationship between body weight and premature mortality is not linear. Very often it is described as J- or U-shaped. There is solid evidence for strong relationships in adults between obesity (as defined by high values of the body mass index, BMI), mortality, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and non-insulin dependent diabetes. However, the opposite end of the BMI distribution (leanness) remains …

  • Marital status and biological condition of Polish males

    Open Access•A Lipowicz•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 44

Strong evidence for marital differences in mortality has been demonstrated in a large number of countries. Married men and women have lower death rates than unmarried individuals within each adult age group. Additionally, married persons tend to be healthier as compared to unmarried. In the literature two explanations for this patterning have been proposed. .The health selection hypothesis. suggested that disabled or less healthy people are not a…
