  • The more than beautiful woman - African folktales of female agency and emancipation

    Ayub Sheik•ARTICLE•Agenda•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4

    Ayub Sheik•ARTICLE•Current Writing•2015

B D Lalla's The Black Coolie (1946 Lalla, B D. 1946. The Black Coolie. Durban: Acme. [Google Scholar]) is a romanticised reverie of the Indian diaspora to the Natal sugar belt. The Black Coolie is graphically suggestive of a racial other, and represents a significant and rare chronicle of the ideological development and expression of the South African Indian migrant community and their realignment in the politics of identity. Lalla's poetry is vi…

  • Sumptuous lives

    Ayub Sheik•ARTICLE•Agenda•2015•Cited by: 2

In a continent notorious for its cultural negation of sexual rights, the unapologetic and intimate lived experiences of characters that populate this potpourri of short stories are an extraordinary achievement and celebration of sexual minorities. Queer Africa, published in 2013 by MaThoko's Books and edited by Karen Martin and Makhosazana Zaba, is an eye-catching collection of 18 stories that imagine queer Africa in a way certain to raise consci…
