  • Early and unintended pregnancy in Eastern and Southern Africa

Open Access•Shakira Choonara, Roseline Hwati et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

In 2019, there were 21 million pregnancies among adolescents aged 15–19 years globally; close to half of these pregnancies were unintended. Early and unintended pregnancy (EUP) remains a pressing concern with severe socioeconomic and health outcomes for adolescent girls aged 15–19 years, their offspring and society. In Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and Uganda h…

  • Evidence attack in public health

Open Access•Nasreen Jessani, R Taylor Williamson et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2022

Bringing evidence into policy and practice discussions is political; more so when evidence from health studies or programme data are deemed controversial or unexpected, or when results are manipulated and misrepresented. Furthermore, opinion and misinformation in recent years has challenged our notions about how to achieve evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM). Less is known of the impact of COVID-19 public health responses on women from key and vulnerable populations. The purpose of this cross-sectional survey conducted in four South African provinces with a high burden of HIV and COVID-19 from September to November 2021 was to advance understanding…

    Claudia Mitchell, R Moletsane et al.•ARTICLE•Agenda•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 1

For this issue of Agenda, we sought articles and other forms of writing and artwork that responded to questions about girl- and young women-led ‘from the ground up’ approaches to policy dialogue an

  • Inside-outside View

    Shakira Choonara•ARTICLE•Agenda•2021

Sub-Saharan Africa has some of the longest ruling leaders in power and there are few structures which are inclusive of youth, either nationally, regionally or at continental level. In November 2018 the African Union (AU) appointed its first Youth Envoy and 10-member Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The move was historic and a step in the right direction. This piece offers a narrative based on unpacking personal experiences as a member of this YAC. S…

  • Sustainable Development girls

Shakira Choonara, Rejoice Banda et al.•ARTICLE•Agenda•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations (UN) recognise the importance of youth involvement yet the reality is that there is limited meaningful engagement especially in developing contexts on sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). This open forum draws on a roundtable discussion with the goal of engaging youth and presenting Pan-African, youth and feminist perspectives on global and continental commitments to SRHR, in particu…
