Nitrogen Source Apportionment of the East River (Dongjiang), China
The East River, locally known as Dongjiang, is the major source of potable water supply for Hong Kong. Because of the rapid economic development in the basin, concerns have been raised regarding the water quality in the river. In this study, total nitrogen (TN) export from the basin in 1998 is estimated for various sources based on a simple correlative approach utilizing measured concentrations in the river, together with some mass balance constr…
The Effects of Annual Harvesting on the Subsequent Phytomass and Species Composition of Grassland and Fernland: A Hong Kong Case
Anthropogenic grasslands mixed with fern and shrubland, on scales from metres to kilometres, are widespread in tropical Southeast Asia, and especially in southern China and adjoining regions where harvesting for domestic fuel is a major factor in their maintenance. Baseline surveys in grassland and fernland in 1989–90 and resurveys in 2001 of three 6 × 20 m plots in Wong Chuk Yuen, Hong Kong, showed substantial change in species composition and t…
Acid Rain and Surface-Water Acidity in Hong Kong
Hong Kong experiences acid precipitation. Little attempt has been made to evaluate the impact of this upon the streams and rivers of the territory. Data from a small study basin reveals annual median pH values of 6.6, 6.8, 6.7, 6.7, 6.7, 6.4 and 6.3 respectively for the years 1989 to 1995. A second small study basin also had median pH values close to neutral. Secondary data sources, such as those provided by the Environmental Protection Departmen…
