The S.S. Ocean dealing with boat people in the 1880s
The S.S. Ocean was unnecessarily placed in quarantine during the Sydney smallpox epidemic of 1881–82. Consequently, the 450 Chinese immigrants on board suffered severe deprivations. This article argues that the Ocean was not quarantined for public health reasons but to distract the media and public attention away from the Parkes government's lack of preparation for the epidemic.
