  • Accelerating semogenesis

    Open Access•Christian Mosbæk Johannessen, Morten Boeriis•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Michael Halliday and Christian Matthiessen’s term ‘semogenesis’ refers to how meaning potentials are created through processes on many co-occurring time frames, most prominently those referred to as ‘phylogenesis’, ‘ontogenesis’ and ‘logogenesis’. The concept was originally infused with linguistic concern in an attempt to link a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) account of the lexico-grammatical and semantic strata with lived experience. In t…

  • The challenge of simple graphics for multimodal studies

    Open Access•Christian Mosbæk Johannessen•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This article suggests that a Multimodal Social Semiotics (MSS) approach to graphics is severely challenged by structurally very simple texts. Methodologically, multimodal studies favour the level at which elements from discrete modes are integrated grammatically into texts. Because the tradition has this focus, the analytical description of the expression plane of many modes is underdeveloped. In the case of graphics, there is no descriptive or e…

  • Experiential meaning potential in the Topaz Energy logo

    Christian Mosbæk Johannessen•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 6

Based on the premise that corporate logos are all pervasive in the semiotic landscapes of the post-industrial, globalized world order, the article contends that there is an increasing need for understanding how logos make meaning thus constraining human behaviour. The article argues that conventional wisdom about the meaning potential of visual texts offers limited insight into logos because they are structurally too simple to convey, for example…
