  • Population health challenges and evaluative thinking

    Open Access•Katina D’Onise, Katherine Pontifex•ARTICLE•Evaluation Journal of Australasia•2023•Cited by: 1

There are multiple complex challenges that the population health sector faces to improve the health of the community, and the sector must work efficiently and effectively to make the most of the committed funds, sometimes in contexts of uncertainty. This article explores, through the case study of the South Australian COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Project, the application of pillars from the Lean Start-up model of setting a clear vision, and creatio…

  • Acute respiratory infection symptoms and Covid-19 testing behaviour

    Open Access•Sonopant Joshi, Katina D’Onise et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

There were relatively high rates of self-reported acute respiratory infection during a period of very low COVID-19 prevalence and low rate of coronavirus testing among symptomatic respondents. Ongoing monitoring of testing uptake, including in higher-risk groups, and possible interventions to improve testing uptake is key to early detection of disease

  • Characteristics of Indigenous adults with poorly controlled diabetes in north Queensland

Open Access•David Johnson, David Ross Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

These results demonstrate a high potential for improved culturally sound community-based management of diabetes and other comorbid conditions in this very high risk population. They also provide further evidence for including albuminuria in cardiovascular risk calculation

  • Pragmatic randomised trial of a 12-week exercise and nutrition program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women

Open Access•Karla J Canuto, Karla Canuto et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ACTRN12610000224022

  • Folate status and health behaviours in two Australian Indigenous populations in north Queensland

    Open Access•Ming Li, R Mcdermott et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2012

Objective To assess nutritional status using red-cell folate (RCF) and associated health behaviours including fruit and vegetable intake, smoking, drinking and physical activity in two Indigenous populations living in remote northern Australia. Design A cross-sectional survey conducted during 1998–2000. Setting Twenty-six rural communities in north Queensland, Australia. Subjects A total of 2524 Indigenous people aged 15 years and over was includ…

  • Can attending preschool reduce the risk of tobacco smoking in adulthood? The effects of Kindergarten Union participation in South Australia

Katina D’Onise, John Lynch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011•References: 29

BACKGROUND: Innovative strategies beyond the health system are required to reduce the prevalence of smoking. Early child development interventions are examples of interventions that can help set children on positive social and educational trajectories, which in turn may also reduce the prevalence of smoking. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of attendance at Kindergarten Union preschools on tobacco smoking in adulthood. METHODS: Kin…
