Romania’s immigration debate under neoliberal hegemony
In 2020, a group of residents of the rural Transylvanian Hungarian-majority municipality of Ditró (in Hungarian), or Ditrău (in Romanian), mobilised themselves against two Sri Lankan bakers. Mainstream media portrayed the incident as xenophobic and racist, the locals as right-wing extremists, and the Sri Lankans as merely ‘migrant workers’, turning the ‘Ditrău incident’ into Romania’s first and most important nationwide immigration debate. This a…
Covid-19 and the Awajún
This study aims at revising the onto-epistemological consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic among the Awajún, an ethnolinguistic group inhabiting the Northern Peruvian Amazon, and how, in a context also fueled by historical marginalization and exclusion, this group experiences, confronts, and makes sense of public policy while developing agency, resistance, and knowledge production. For this purpose, we analyze the material, epistemological, and o…

Whiteness in Political Rhetoric
Drawing upon Paulo Drinot's works on how racialized assumptions have been central to the transition toward industrialization, and neoliberalism in early 20th-, and early 21st-century Peru, respectively, this monograph analyses how contemporary powerful state agents efficiently naturalize whiteness among Peruvians by equating it with progress and constructing the non-core group as a racialized “Other”, in and through the articulation of language a…
Fifa seen from a postcolonial perspective
FIFA was created in Zurich in 1904 in order to oversee international football competitions among eight European states. The fact that FIFA was created by eight European states at the turn of the twentieth century is significant. The geopolitical context of the period is important for understanding FIFA’s pro-colonialist roots. With the exception of Switzerland, all the founding countries of FIFA were colonial powers. FIFA’s foundation coincided w…
Utilization and purchase of medical care services in Mexico by residents in the United States of America, 1998-1999
Large numbers of people residing near the border in New Mexico traveled south to Mexico to purchase medications and medical care. Lack of medical insurance was associated with higher frequencies of these purchases. There seems to be a need to establish relationships between U.S. private and public care plans and Mexican medical care providers to identify appropriate mechanisms for U.S. residents to purchase medical care in Mexico

Patterns of alcohol use and the risk of drinking and driving among US high school students

Data from a national sample of US high school students were used to assess patterns of alcohol use among adolescents in relation to the risk of drinking and driving. Prevalence and odds ratios were calculated for drinking and driving associated with patterns of alcohol use. Drinking and driving increased with increasing frequency o…
Long-term Age-Specific Prevalence of Cigarette Smoking Among Hispanics in the United States
To investigate trends in the prevalence of cigarette smoking among different age groups of Mexican-Americans, Cuban-Americans, and Puerto Rican-Americans, the smoking histories of 8,286 adults and adolescents from the 1982-83 Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) were evaluated. Age-specific prevalence rate curves were constructed by using the estimated smoking rates among 8-, 18-, 28-, 38-, 48-, and 58-year-olds from 1923 to …
