This essay explores Luc Besson's reconstitution of Joan of Arc as a postmodern subject through an analysis in particular of the traumatic childhood and the crisis of faith that he invents for her. Joan's spiritual calling is re-interpreted in psycho-pathological terms in the first half of the film and her early success in battle is cast in terms of gendered warfare.
