  • Cognitive associations of orthographic knowledge and spelling in children with Developmental Language Disorder

Gareth J Williams, Rebecca F Larkin et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Special Needs…•2026

Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) often have difficulties with spelling. Orthographic knowledge, which can be separated into general and specific orthographic knowledge, is a key source of information in long term memory children draw upon to make accurate spelling attempts. This paper reports findings from a study aimed to assess whether children’s orthographic knowledge is associated with spelling when vocabulary and working m…

  • Association between screen time and suspected developmental coordination disorder in preschoolers: A national population-based study in China

Open Access•Shanshan Geng, Weijie Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction Excessive screen exposure (ESE) is a growing global public health concern. This study aims to investigate the potential association between ESE and suspected developmental coordination disorder (DCD) in Chinese pre-schoolers, with or without siblings. Method A retrospective cohort study was conducted, involving 126,433 children from 551 cities in China. The Little Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (LDCDQ) was employed…

  • Prenatal second-hand smoke exposure and the risk of suspected developmental coordination disorder in preschoolers: A nationwide retrospective cohort study in China

Open Access•Meiqin Wu, Gareth J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Prenatal exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) is associated with increased neurodevelopmental problems in children, however, its impact on the risk of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) in preschoolers have not been studied thoroughly. Herein, we probed this association based on a nationwide retrospective cohort study of 149,005 preschoolers in China. We divided the objects into the prenatal SHS-exposed group or the no prenatal smoke expose…

  • Early Motor Milestones in Infancy and Later Motor Impairments: A Population-Based Data Linkage Study

Open Access•Jing Hua, Gareth J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Our study indicates that even a mild delay in crawling and walking onsets in infancy increase the risk for subsequent motor impairments in childhood, and children with motor impairments revealed a different transition pattern from crawling to walking. The motor abilities of children with motor impairments can be observed to diverge from typically developing children as early as 6-8 months old. The findings can facilitate the early identification …

  • Association of the Onset of Self-Feeding With Subsequent Suspected Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Prospective Cohort Study in China

Open Access•Jing Hua, Gareth J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

The delayed onset time of self-feeding acts as an early behavioral marker for later childhood motor impairment. Moreover, children with a sibling may benefit from additional interaction and their motor developmental pattern may be affected by the presence of a sibling
