Audio and linguistic prediction of objective and subjective cognition in older adults: What is the role of different prompts
Acoustic and psycholinguistic features are relevant to assessment of cognition and subjective cognitive complaints, with combined features performing best. However, subjective and objective cognitions were predicted to differing extents by the different tasks, and the feature sets
The use of wastewater surveillance to estimate Sars-CoV-2 fecal viral shedding pattern and identify time periods with intensified transmission
These estimates may be useful in understanding changes in underlying infection rate and help quantify changes in COVID-19 transmission and severity over time. We have also demonstrated that wastewater surveillance data can support the identification of time periods with potentially intensified transmission
Intersections of Modifiable Risks: Loneliness is Associated with Poor Subjective Sleep Quality in Older Women at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease
We examined the relationship between subjective and objective sleep outcomes and loneliness in older women at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our sample consisted of 39 participants (aged 65+) with mild cognitive deficits who completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and an at home sleep test, to determine presence of obstructive sleep apnea. Based on sleep quality scores, individuals categorized as “poor …
One session treatment (OST) is equivalent to multi‐session cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in children with specific phobias (Aspect): Results from a national non‐inferiority randomized controlled …
BACKGROUND: 5%-10% children and young people (CYP) experience specific phobias that impact daily functioning. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is recommended but has limitations. One Session Treatment (OST), a briefer alternative incorporating CBT principles, has demonstrated efficacy. The Alleviating Specific Phobias Experienced by Children Trial (ASPECT) investigated the non-inferiority of OST compared to multi-session CBT for treating specifi…
Physical Activity in Adults with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder: A Large Cross-Sectional Survey Exploring Patterns, Preferences, Barriers, and Motivating Factors
Adults with severe mental ill health may have specific attitudes toward physical activity. To inform intervention development, we conducted a survey to assess the physical activity patterns, preferences, barriers, and motivations of adults with severe mental ill health living in the community. Data were summarised using descriptive statistics, and logistic regressions were used to explore relationships between physical activity status and partici…
Physical and Mental Health Characteristics of 2,962 Adults With Subjective Cognitive Complaints
We investigated subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs), as well as physical and mental health factors, in adults and older adults. U.S. residents ( N = 2,962) were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk platform and completed a 90-item survey. Overall, 493/1930 (25.5%) of younger adults and 278/1032 (26.9%) of older adults endorsed SCCs. Analyses revealed worse physical and mental health characteristics in the SCC+ compared to the SCC- group, w…
Plasma Levels of Neuron- and Astrocyte-Derived Exosomal Amyloid Beta1-42, Amyloid Beta1-40, and Phosphorylated Tau Levels in Schizophrenia Patients and Non-psychiatric Comparison Subjects: Relationshi…
Introduction: Cognitive deficits in people with schizophrenia (PWS) are a major predictor of disability and functioning, yet the underlying pathophysiology remains unclear. A possible role of amyloid and tau biomarkers (hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease) is still speculative in schizophrenia. Exosomes or extracellular vesicles, involved with cell-to-cell communication and waste removal, can be used to assay brain-based proteins from peripheral blo…
Do Words Matter? Detecting Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults Using Natural Language Processing
Introduction: Social isolation and loneliness (SI/L) are growing problems with serious health implications for older adults, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We examined transcripts from semi-structured interviews with 97 older adults (mean age 83 years) to identify linguistic features of SI/L. Methods: Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods were used to identify relevant interview segments (responses to specific questions), extra…

Covid-19 Outbreak — New York City, February 29–June 1, 2020
New York City (NYC) was an epicenter of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in the United States during spring 2020 (1). During March-May 2020, approximately 203,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). To obtain more complete data, DOHMH used supplementary information sources and relied on direct data importation and matching of patient identifiers for data on …
Battling the Modern Behavioral Epidemic of Loneliness: Suggestions for Research and Interventions
This Viewpoint explores loneliness as a behavioral epidemic.
Daily and Seasonal Variation in Light Exposure among the Old Order Amish
Exposure to artificial bright light in the late evening and early night, common in modern society, triggers phase delay of circadian rhythms, contributing to delayed sleep phase syndrome and seasonal affective disorder. Studying a unique population like the Old Order Amish (OOA), whose lifestyles resemble pre-industrial societies, may increase understanding of light's relationship with health. Thirty-three participants (aged 25-74, mean age 53.5;…
Clinical Correlates of Insulin Resistance in Chronic Schizophrenia: Relationship to Negative Symptoms
Higher prevalence of physical comorbidity and premature mortality in persons with schizophrenia (PwS) results primarily from heightened cardiovascular and metabolic risks. The literature suggests that insulin resistance precedes the development of obesity, smoking, and use of antipsychotic medications, although these likely play a compounding role later in the course of the disorder. It is thus important to discover the clinical characteristics o…
Life Cycle Impacts of Natural Fiber Composites for Automotive Applications: Effects of Renewable Energy Content and Lightweighting
This study examines the life cycle energy demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with substituting natural cellulose and kenaf in place of glass fibers in automotive components. Specifically, a 30 wt% glass‐fiber composite component weighing 3 kilograms (kg) was compared to a 30 wt% cellulose fiber composite component (2.65 kg) and 40 wt% kenaf fiber composite component (2.79 kg) for six cars, crossovers, and sport utility vehicles.…
How sexually dimorphic are we? Review and synthesis
The belief that Homo sapiens is absolutely dimorphic with the respect to sex chromosome composition, gonadal structure, hormone levels, and the structure of the internal genital duct systems and external genitalia, derives from the platonic ideal that for each sex there is a single, universally correct developmental pathway and outcome. We surveyed the medical literature from 1955 to the present for studies of the frequency of deviation from the …
