  • Energy expenditure and intensity of ritual jumping–dancing in male M aasai

Open Access•Dirk Lund Christensen, Kate Westgate et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2023

Intensity during traditional jumping-dance activity was moderate, but on average sevenfold higher than habitual physical activity. These rituals are common, and can make a substantial contribution to overall physical activity in Maasai men, and thus be promoted as a culture-specific activity to increase energy expenditure and maintain good health in this population

  • Directly measured aerobic fitness in male Maasai of Tanzania

Open Access•Dirk Lund Christensen, Sine W Jørgensen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2022

OBJECTIVES: The agro-pastoralist Maasai of East Africa are highly physically active, but their aerobic fitness has so far only been estimated using heart rate (HR) response to submaximal exercise and not directly measured. Thus, we aimed to measure aerobic fitness directly using respiratory gas analysis in a group of Maasai, and habitual physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) as explanatory variable. METHODS: In total, 21 (10 rural, 11 semi-…

  • Dietary habits, metabolic health and vitamin D status in Greenlandic children

Open Access•Julie Courraud, Jonas Salling Quist et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2020

Objective: To compare the dietary habits of children living in northern villages and in the capital of Greenland, given the reported transition from traditional to westernised diet in adults over recent decades, and to explore the association between consumption of marine mammals and fish (MMF) and the children’s metabolic profile and vitamin D status. Design: Children answered an FFQ encompassing sixty-four individual food types pooled into six …

  • Intake of total dietary sugar and fibre is associated with insulin resistance among Danish 8–10- and 14–16-year-old girls but not boys. European Youth Heart Studies I and II

Open Access•Iben Kynde, Nina Føns Johnsen et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2010

Objective To examine the dietary intake of total sugar, added sugar, non-added sugar and starch as well as dietary fibre and glycaemic index (GI) and their respective associations with insulin resistance. Design Mixed linear models were used to study both cross-sectional and prospective associations between carbohydrate components and insulin resistance separately in girls and boys. Diet was assessed by a single 24 h recall interview and insulin …
