  • Through the eyes of community health workers

Open Access•Anusha Ban, Ashish Shrestha et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, elucidate the strengths, weaknesses, and significant gaps in infrastructure, compatibility and consistency in communication systems, as well as the quality of collaborative relationships, and provider and workforce capacity. They also expose longstanding patterns of mistrust in the government and healthcare systems, and inadequacy in socio-economic infrastructures. These issues resulted in…

  • Linking social capital and the political economy of substance treatment delivery

Open Access•Carissa van den Berk‐Clark, Elmer Duncan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2024

The roles of lead agencies and ROSC coordinators were highlighted in the development and implementation of ROSCs. ROSC membership structures allow for bonding, bridging, and linking social capital. Still, additional technical support is needed to improve accountability, reduce power differentials and turf battles, and ensure greater participation among more diverse stakeholders

  • The role of impulsivity on health behavior related to cardiovascular disease among young adults

Carissa van den Berk‐Clark•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2020

Background: There is a large body of research indicating that trauma increases risk for cardiovascular disease, but mechanisms that explain this relationship are not well understood. One potential explanation may be that trauma has been found to be associated with both impulsivity and dysfunctional health behaviors, which in turn lead to cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this article was to determine the pathway from trauma to impulsivity to…

  • A Political Economic Model of Homeless Services

Carissa van den Berk‐Clark•ARTICLE•Journal of Progressive Human…•2019•References: 18

Despite attempts to end homelessness in the United States occurring over the past 10 years, homelessness has only been reduced by about 10%. This article introduces a theoretical model for why some individuals have gained housing and other types of services while others have not. This model incorporates both the political economy theory and the street-level bureaucracy theory to explain service gaps for homeless individuals. Using this model, thi…

  • Mental Health Help Seeking Among Traumatized Individuals

    Open Access•Carissa van den Berk-Clark, Carissa van den Berk‐Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2017

OBJECTIVE: Prior research has suggested that competing neurobehavioral decision-making processes might affect health outcomes among traumatized populations. Regulatory imbalances to impulsive and executive decision systems are affected by high levels of stress, including stress resulting from traumatic events. Such regulatory imbalances have been associated with addictive behaviors. However, it is not well known whether addictive behavior increas…

  • Impact of Race on the Implementation of Empirically Supported Treatments in Substance Abuse Treatment

Carissa van den Berk-Clark, Carissa van den Berk‐Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Practice…•2017

The effort to address the gap between research and practice in substance abuse treatment has largely neglected the role of local resources and political trends. This study seeks to clarify the role of the local environment in implementing empirically supported treatments (ESTs). The study consisted of secondary data analysis of substance abuse treatment centers (N = 13,079) and U.S. Census data to determine the likelihood of using EST by substanc…

  • Implementing Outside the Box

David A Patterson Silver Wolf, David A Patterson Silver Wolf Adelv Unegv et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 36

A cross-cutting theme that emerged was the context in which the intervention was implemented, as this was central to each of the three primary themes identified from the focus groups (i.e., the usefulness and appropriateness of the intervention and the implementation process overall). Practitioner buy-in concerns also indicate the need for better addiction service training opportunities for those without addiction-specific educational backgrounds…

  • Elderly Homeless Veterans in Los Angeles

Carissa van den Berk-Clark, Carissa van den Berk‐Clark et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Objectives. We compared the characteristics of chronically homeless and acutely homeless elderly veterans to better understand precipitants of homelessness. Methods. We conducted interviews with 33 chronically and 26 acutely homeless veterans aged 65 years and older receiving transitional housing services in Los Angeles, California, between 2003 and 2005. We asked questions regarding their sociodemographic characteristics and other social status …

  • Deconstructing Neoliberal Community Development Approaches and a Case for the Solidarity Economy

    Carissa van den Berk‐Clark, Loretta Pyles•ARTICLE•Journal of Progressive Human…•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 16

The solidarity economy movement is a burgeoning global justice movement that focuses on economic justice, sustainability, and democratic processes. Social workers care about alleviating poverty, but they generally adhere to neoliberal strategies and ignore transformative approaches to economic justice such as solidarity economics. Recent neoliberal community-development efforts center on approaches such as asset development, human capital buildin…
