Police use of Taser
Police use of TASER can have serious consequences; therefore, it is important to examine any modifiable operational factors that impact an officer’s decision to use TASER. As previous research has identified a potential relationship between crewing and TASER use, a systematic review was undertaken to explore which factors might impact use of TASER by the Police Service of England and Wales, including officer crewing levels. Over 14,000 records we…
Covid-19, distress and potential trauma exposure in the police service of England and Wales
This study provides an initial exploration into the impact of COVID-19 on the exposure of police officers to potentially traumatic events and their subsequent impacts on wellbeing. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered from over twelve thousand rank-and-file officers across England and Wales in Autumn 2020, via an online survey. The results not only identify several frequently experienced COVID-related duties and events that are potenti…
The development of a UK police traumatic events checklist
One in five UK police officers suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, yet there is no gold standard measure of trauma exposure available. This study coded 4,987 exposures reported by 1,531 UK police officers, using their own language. The resulting checklist describes over 70% of typical ‘worst’ reported traumatic incidents (plus situational factors, including Covid19). The Police Traumatic Experien…

There is limited contemporary evidence concerning whether single crewing – the deployment of unaccompanied police officers – presents a risk to officer safety. This exploratory self-report study examined the frequency of single crewing in England and Wales and associations with violence-related variables. Officers represented by the Police Federation of England and Wales contributed survey data on four forms of violent victimisation and injuries …
