Employment Outcomes for Social Security Disability Insurance Applicants Who Use Opioids
In this article, we examine the relationship between self-reported opioid use and employment outcomes among Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) applicants who applied to SSDI in 2009. We use a machine learning method to identify opioids recorded in text fields on SSDI applications. Studying outcomes for 4 years after the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) determined the application outcome, we find a negative and statistically sign…
Opioid Use Among Social Security Disability Insurance Applicants
Our study is the first to provide statistics on opioid use among U.S. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) applicants. We use an innovative machine-learning method to identify opioids in open-ended text fields in SSDI administrative data. We find that more than 30% of applicants between 2007 and 2017 reported using one or more opioids, a rate that is about 50% higher than in the general population. Rates of reported opioid use varied over …

Responding to Disability Onset in the Late Working Years

We find that one-quarter of workers go on to experience new disabilities before full-retirement age. Relative to their peers who do not report disabilities, stopping work and significant occupational changes are more c…
Still Point of the Turning World
Schubert’s late instrumental music evokes a distinctive time-sense which not only expands the expressive potential of stylistic norms, but also invites deeper reflections on the relationship between the self and the world through his multilayered construction of temporal consciousness. The sense of now, towards which past and future gravitate, is particularly salient. In this article, I examine the formal, harmonic, topical processes through whic…
The Postretirement Well-Being of Workers With Disabilities
Older workers who develop significant limitations in health or functioning face declines in income and consumption and an increased likelihood of poverty in the years prior to retirement. We assess the extent to which those differences persist after reaching retirement age. We use the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) linked to Social Security Administration (SSA) records to compare the postretirement financial well-being of workers who experienc…
