Sailing Within and Beyond
Framed as a career reflection, this essay narrates disciplinary history, specifically how aspects of contemporary musicology can inform performance studies research (staging and publication). In doing so, the importance of teachers, and the transformational and deeply personal responses to embodiment emerge as defining features of disciplinary practice

Chasing Kundry's Shadow
Do we rehearse our gestures of grief? At once opera history, performance criticism, and personal narrative, in this mystory I pursue Kundry's shadow as literary leitmotif across Richard Wagner's stage, the Holocaust, and my own personal narrative of loss. Structured as palimpsest, this mystory explores gestured memory as witness onstage and off, exposes the dangers it signals as well, and delays any completion of thought as a deliberate artistic …
Creating the Image of a Martyr
Part of the English Protestant historical memory portrays Bishops Gardiner and Bonner as so frightened of commoners' exposure to scripture that they jailed those who read the Bible publicly. This memory stems from John Foxe's martyrdom of John Porter, who was arrested for Bible reading and died of mistreatment in prison. Foxe's image of Porter reappears in the artist George Harvey's The First Reading of the Bible in the Crypt of Old St. Paul's, 1…
The Force of Callas’ Kiss
Theorizing the "Think Different" advertising campaign as an example of Foucault's mirrored heteropian site, this essay argues that the campaign is structured to create an amphigorical perspective, a ubiquitous form of postmodern parody.
