Lapita diet and subsistence strategies on W atom I sland, P apua N ew G uinea
Stable isotope ratios (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) were analyzed from the bone collagen of individuals ( n = 8) from a Lapita burial ground (ca. 2800–2350 BP) on Watom Island, located off northeast New Britain in the Bismarck Archipelago. The aim of this study was to assess the diet and subsistence strategies of humans that lived during the later Lapita period in Near Oceania. To aid in the interpretation of the human diet we analyzed the stable isotope r…
Changing role of nearshore-marine foods in the subsistence economy of inland upland communities during the last millennium in the tropical Pacific Islands
Although the Fiji Islands have been settled for more than 3000 years, the prehistoric settlement history of the 750-km2 Ba River Valley in northern Viti Levu Island is largely unknown. Investigations of two former upland settlement sites (Tubabaka and Vatusososo) in defensive locations, more than 10 km from the coast, and occupied perhaps AD 1250-1850, are reported here. At both sites, shellfish remains are abundant and dominated by nearshore-mar…
Nature and Chronology of Prehistoric Settlement on the Vatia Peninsula, Northern Viti Levu Island, Fiji
Two upland sites from the Vatia Peninsula, northern Viti Levu Island, Fiji, were excavated as part of a larger project investigating the settlement history of this area. These sites represent the first intensive survey and excavation program in this part of Fiji. The sites are a cave (Matanigaga), which acted as a short-term shelter, and a ring-wall mound (Drautana), one of a number of similar sites interpreted as likely precursors to complex rid…
Cortical index of three prehistoric human Pacific Island samples
To understand stress, attention must focus on the costs and limits of adaptation. The current study investigates two non‐specific indicators of stress in human skeletal remains from three prehistoric sites in the Pacific Islands as an attempt to understand differential responses to island environments. The samples used in this study represent both colonising and established populations and are spread geographically throughout the Pacific Islands.…
The People of Wairau Bar
A new study of macroscopic evidence of health in Wairau Bar human skeletal remains (koiwi tangata), prior to their reburial in April 2009, generally supports the views of Houghton (1975), but reports new evidence of childhood stress, the presence of specific infectious diseases, and revises dental evidence of diet. Assessment of health parameters between spatially separated groups within the cemetery (uruupa) found differences in the demography, …
