  • Glauconite and Chromatic Recipes in Roman Wall Painting from Astigi (Écija, Spain)

    Open Access•Miriam López-Fernández, Irene Loschi et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

The present study examines the composition and technological strategies used to produce green hues in Roman wall paintings from Augusta Firma–Astigi (Écija, Spain) through Raman spectroscopy. The results identify glauconite as the main green earth pigment and reveal at least two groups with distinct Raman responses, suggesting differences in structural order and geological provenance. The analyses also demonstrate the deliberate combination of gr…

  • Gender inequality in Ancient Rome through archaeometric studies of wine in funerary contexts

    Open Access•José Rafael Ruiz•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2025

This article examines how the archaeometric and archaeological analysis of funerary assemblages in Roman tombs reveals gender inequality in Ancient Rome. Through modern scientific methodologies based on techniques coupled with mass spectrometry, differentiated patterns in funerary offerings according to the sex of the deceased are identified. The role of wine is analyzed as a symbolic marker of male power, linking its production, consumption, and…

  • Archaeological and Archaeochemical Analysis of the Painting in the Baths in Julián Besteiro Square, Carmona (Seville, Spain)

Open Access•Gonzalo Castillo Alcántara, Daniel Cosano et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•References: 6

This paper addresses the archaeological and archaeochemical study of the fragments of mural painting recovered from the excavation of the baths in Julián Besteiro Square in Carmona. The analysis of the fragments allowed us to associate them with the first phase of the building’s decoration, one of the few examples of urban mural painting currently known in Carmona. It was dated between the first half and the middle of the first century AD. The ar…

  • Archaeological and Archaeometric Insights into a Roman Wall Painting Assemblage from the Blanes Dump (Mérida)

Open Access•Gonzalo Castillo Alcántara, Daniel Cosano et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In this paper we describe the archaeological and archaeometric analysis of a Third Pompeian Style assemblage from the Blanes dump in Mérida (Spain). Based on the pottery context, the material would have been part of the decoration of a public or private space remodelled towards the end of the 1st century AD. Several samples from to the middle area of the assemblage, including panels, inter-panels and a frieze, were selected and studied using X-ra…

Urn containing the reddish liquid • The liquid found in the tomb of Carmona is the oldest wine in the world. • The wine contained in the urn was white. • The polyphenols identified in the archaeological liquid are present in wines. • The mineral profile of the archaeological liquid is similar to that of a wine. Although ancient wines adsorbed on vessel walls or their remains can be identified with the help of specific biomarkers, no analysis of s…

  • Archaeometric Identification of a Perfume from Roman Times

    Open Access•Daniel Cosano, J M San Román et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Although archaeological excavations have recovered a large number of vessels used to hold perfumes or ointments in ancient Rome, little is known about the chemical composition or origin of the substances they contained. Most available information pertains to ointment and/or cosmetic bases rather than to essences. The discovery in 2019 of an ointment jar (unguentarium) made of rock crystal (quartz) that was sealed with a stopper and contained a so…
