Effects of Buddhist Interventions in Their Original Context
Effects of Marital Disruption on Anxiety, Depression, and Cambodian Somatic Symptoms
BACKGROUND: The impact of marital disruption (divorce or widowed) on the mental health of Cambodian persons has not been studied with a comprehensive and representative national sample. AIMS: In this study, anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms were compared among divorced, widowed, and married Cambodian individuals using data from a national mental health survey. METHOD: Data was collected from 2,690 adults residing in nine randomly selected…
Inflexible responses to uncertainty
The findings were consistent with previous researchers positing PI as an overarching construct encompassing IU and other related psychological vulnerabilities. PI facets beyond EA and CF warrant more investigations. Clinically, PI and PI facets could be important intervention targets for high IU individuals in times of uncertainty. Post-traumatic stress, cognitive fusion, and intolerance of uncertainty as longitudinal predictors of post-traumatic growth from the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic was a significant stressor that posed threats to life and ways of living. The harmful psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been well documented, but positive psychological changes can also follow significant stressors. These changes are referred to as post-traumatic growth (PTG). The present study explored how PTG may develop from a contextual behavioral science perspective. Intolerance of uncertainty and cogn…
Acculturation Mitigates the Negative Impact of Perceived Stress on Depressive Symptoms Among U.S. Chinese Older Adults
The present study aimed to examine the role of acculturation in mitigating the negative impact of perceived stress on depressive symptoms among U.S. Chinese older adults. Data of 3,159 Chinese adults over 60 years old were drawn from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago (PINE). In addition to socio-demographic variables, participants’ acculturation levels, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms were assessed. Perceived stress was…
Psychological Inflexibility and HF-HRV reactivity to laboratory stressors
Predicting personal protective equipment use, trauma symptoms, and physical symptoms in the USA during the early weeks of the Covid-19 lockdown (April 9–18, 2020)
A pilot study of acceptance and commitment therapy for sexual minorities experiencing work stress
Chinese international student stress and coping
The perceived impact of the 2016 election
The present study examined the relationship between the self-reported personal impact of the election of President Donald J. Trump, as measured by the Personal Impact of the Election Scale (PIES), and physical and mental health. A sample of 299 MTurk Amazon workers completed an online survey, including measures of the perceived personal impact of the 2016 presidential election, thought suppression, and mental and physical health. A mediation mode…
A quantitative synthesis of functional analytic psychotherapy single-subject research
Assessment of Psychopathology
Behavior therapists must often design treatments for individual patients who present with a wide array of psychophysiological disorders and health problems. Behavioral assessment is a learning-based and empirically-grounded approach to assessment that is designed to systematically gather, integrate, and summarize information about the form and function of a patient's difficulties. Functional analytic case modeling is a strategy that can be used t…
An Evaluation of the Impact of Social Support Manipulations on Cardiovascular Reactivity to Laboratory Stressors
Research findings have suggested that social support decreases cardiovascular reactivity and reduces the incidence of cardiovascular disease. The authors describe 2 studies evaluating the association between social support and cardiovascular reactivity to a stressor. In both studies, it was predicted that the presence of a supportive person would exert a buffering effect on cardiovascular reactivity. In Study 1, 68 participants were randomly assi…
Evaluating Group Process in a Stress Management Intervention
Objective: The authors evaluated relationships among group process and treatment outcomes in a stress management intervention. Method: A group-based stress management intervention was provided to a sample of self-referred adults. After each therapy session, group members completed a process measure. Before and after the intervention, group members underwent a psychophysiological assessment of negative moods, daily stress, physical symptoms, and c…
Perceived Susceptibility to Heart Disease and Preventive Health Behavior among Type A and Type B Individuals
Although the Type A behavior pattern has been the subject of extensive research, surprisingly little information is available about the preventive health behavior of this population. Measures of perceived susceptibility, preventive health behavior, current stress, and risk for cardiovascular disease were obtained from 37 Type A and 37 Type B college students. Results indicated that the Type A students generated susceptibility judgments that covar…
