  • Child Supervision and Burn Outcome among Admitted Patients at Major Trauma Hospitals in the Gambia

    Open Access•Edrisa Sanyang, Corinne Peek‐Asa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Burn-related injuries are a significant burden in children, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where more than 90% of burn-related pediatric deaths occur. Lack of adult supervision of children is a major risk for pediatric burn injuries. The goal of this paper was to examine the general characteristics of burns and identify burn injury outcomes among adult-supervised children compared to those who were not supervised. The s…

  • Safety behavior among Iowa junior high and high school students

Mario Schootman, Laurence J Fuortes et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•References: 1

The goal of this study was to determine demographic factors associated with reported safety behavior by studying 2250 Iowa junior high and high school students via a self-administered questionnaire. Students attending rural schools used front seat belts and helmets less frequently than urban students. Seat belt and helmet use and swim safety decreased dramatically with age. Occurrences of driving or riding while drunk or high increased with age. …

  • Leukemia incidence and radioactivity in drinking water in 59 Iowa towns

    L Fuortes, Laurence J Fuortes et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•References: 6

Fifty-nine towns in Iowa with single source drinking water supplies were stratified on the basis of radium content in finished non-softened water to test the hypothesis of an association with total or acute myeloid leukemia. Fourteen towns had radium concentrations in drinking water exceeding the EPA safety limit of 5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). A small increasing trend existed for total leukemia with increased radium content in drinking water …

  • Occupational disease surveillance data sources, 1985

    J T Muldoon, Jeffery Muldoon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 4

Health department epidemiologists in 50 states, New York City, and the District of Columbia were surveyed in 1985 about seven potential data sources for occupational disease surveillance. Reported sources of occupational disease data were: automated workers' compensation claims (63 per cent of the 52 respondents); provider reports (62 per cent); death certificates with occupation or industry (60 per cent); cancer registries with occupational hist…
