  • Grand corruption in Mexico

    Open Access•Turid Hagene•ARTICLE•European Review of Latin American…•2019•Cited by: 1

This article offers an exemplary case of grand corruption in Mexico, narrating the story of how a series of actors and institutions at all levels collaborated to obtain favours, while dispossessing an agrarian community of its property rights, and replacing its elected Commissariat with a person of their choice, paying him the equivalent of US$3 million. This manoeuvre gave right of way to President Peña Nieto’s interurban train, at the risk of r…

  • The Power of Ethnography

    Turid Hagene•ARTICLE•Forum for Development Studies•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 20

This article explores and argues the suitability of ethnographic methods, primarily participant observation, in the research of politics, and in the construction of concepts for theory building. The argument is sustained by using a case study of a network of political clientelism and some instances of vote-buying in a native village in Mexico City. The author maintains that long-term participant observation is particularly well suited to discover…

  • Deep Politics

Open Access•Turid Hagene, Iñigo González-Fuente•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2016

The specifi c contribution of this study is to explore how a communitarian lifeworld prepares the ground for practices of political clientelism without requiring the "foundational favor" noted in other contexts. Based on the encounter between ethnographies from two different communities of the Mesoamerican tradition in Mexico, the article argues that this lifeworld is forged by the habitual ways in which most collective tasks are carried out, tha…

  • The Role and Style of Meetings in a Native Village in Mexico City

    Open Access•Turid Hagene•ARTICLE•European Review of Latin American…•2015•References: 18

This article explores the role of meetings and the style in which they are carried out in the local community of San Lorenzo Acopilco in Mexico City. The community predates the Spanish conquest, and thus forms part of this megacity’s 200 native villages (pueblos originarios), which to this day reproduce distinctive social, political and religious practices. Ethnographies of three meetings are presented and analysed with concepts and theories from…

  • Political Clientelism in Mexico

    Open Access•Turid Hagene•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2015•Cited by: 11•References: 34

This article explores practices of political clientelism in a native village in Mexico City during recent elections (2006, 2012), aiming to create more conceptual clarity and to demonstrate the usefulness of ethnographic approaches. Seen from the clients' and the brokers' perspective, political clientelism and vote buying are two different practices, carried out in different ways, with different degrees of legitimacy. The problem-solving network …

  • The Role of Love in the Reproduction of Gender Asymmetries

    Open Access•Turid Hagene•ARTICLE•European Review of Latin American…•2010•References: 4

In this article the author explores the dynamics through which emotional dependency could reproduce women’s subordination. The ethnographies presented feature women who work for an income, provide housing, housework and childcare, as well as emotional and sexual support for husbands that often have several women or families. Masculinity in this context does not require family maintenance; ‘absentee patriarchy’ is the term suggested for this gende…

  • Elections in the Context of Everyday Practices

    Turid Hagene•ARTICLE•Forum for Development Studies•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork this article discusses the 2006 elections in Mexico as they transpired in a pueblo originario (native town) in Mexico City. The main topic of the article is to explore people’s motivation for voting, given that the ethnographic material demonstrates massive distrust in politicians and elections, whereas electoral statistics reveal high rates of participation. The article thus explores the meaning of votin…
