    Laurence J Alison, L Alison et al.•BOOK•Orbit•2020

ORBIT is an evidence-based approach to the analysis and training for interviewing high-value detainees by law enforcement, security services, and the military. Although its origins go as far back as 2005, it gained considerable traction after 2012, when the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group, formed by the Obama Administration in the United States, funded work for assessment of its application in the context of interviews with high-value tar…

  • Searching for a Needle in a Needle Stack

Brent Snook, Michelle Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2006

This paper considers a suspect prioritization technique and tests its validity using a sample of commercial armed robbery offences from St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. The proposed technique is empirically grounded in criminal careers and journey‐to‐crime research. Suspects with a previous criminal history are selected and ranked in ascending order by the distance they live from the location of the crime in question, with the nearest suspect giv…

  • Behavioural coherence in group robbery

    Open Access•Louise Porter, Louise E Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The behaviour of offenders and victims in 116 cases of group robbery (61 commercial, 55 personal) was examined. Four interpersonal themes were evident: dominance, submission, co‐operation and hostility. These themes are governed by the principles of complementarity such that offender dominance elicits victim submission (reciprocity) and vice versa, while co‐operative offenders tend to elicit victim co‐operation (correspondence). Hostile offences …

  • Behavioural coherence in violent group activity

    Open Access•Louise Porter, Louise E Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 21

This study provides an analysis of offender‐victim interactions in 223 cases of sexual violence committed in gangs. Cases were derived from archival sources such as law reports. A multivariate analysis revealed four interpersonal themes (dominance, submission, co‐operation, and hostility) previously identified in studies of lone sexual assault [Alison and Stein, Vicious Circles: Accounts of stranger sexual assault reflect abusive variants of conv…

  • The Organized/Disorganized Typology of Serial Murder

David V Canter, David Canter et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2004•Cited by: 9•References: 16

Despite weaknesses in the organized/disorganized classification of serial killers, it is drawn on for "offender profiles," theories of offending, and in murder trials. This dichotomy was therefore tested by the multidimensional scaling of the co-occurrence of 39 aspects of serial killings derived 100 murders committed by 100 U.S. serial killers. Results revealed no distinct subsets of offense characteristics reflecting the dichotomy. They showed …
