The culture of political connections, financing constraints, and performance
This article examines how firm political connections affect the financing constraints of Pakistani firms, and how these are related to firm performance. Using panel data for the listed, non-financial, Pakistani firms, over the 2007–15 period, our empirical analysis shows that in Pakistan formal political connections affect significantly firm financial status: politically connected firms are less financially constrained. The results are consistent…
The Chinese‐style macroeconomic control
This paper extends the existing studies of cyclical fiscal policy by providing the first systematic theoretical and empirical study of cyclical quasi‐fiscal investment of state‐owned enterprises (SOEs) in China. Using data from Chinese listed companies and the System GMM method, the results show that: (1) both central and local SOEs exhibit expansion‐biased investment behaviours; (2) the expansion‐biased investment of central SOEs mainly goes to …
Productivity effects of corporate income tax
With a persistent global economic slump, governments encourage economic growth by expansionary fiscal policies through tax cuts. Total factor productivity (TFP) is an important determinant of corporate development and economic growth. Taking China's 2008 Corporate Income Tax Reform as a quasi‐natural experiment, this paper uses data from China's A‐share listed companies from 2003 to 2018 and difference‐in‐differences analyses to identify the impa…
Study on the use and effectiveness of malaria preventive measures reported by employees of Chinese construction companies in Western Africa in 2021
In our sample of Chinese construction workers going to Africa, some individual preventive measures had a stronger association with malaria prevention than a variety of public environmental measures. Furthermore, individual and public preventive measures were not associated with each other. Both of these findings are surprising and require further investigation in larger and more diverse samples. This- study provides important clues about the chal…

How Responsive are Chinese Exports to Exchange Rate Changes? Evidence from Firm-level Data
This article examines the impact of exchange rate changes on Chinese firms’ decisions on export market entry and export share. Using a large dataset for Chinese firms in 2000--2006, we find that changes in exchange rate levels play a significant role on both export extensive and intensive margins of Chinese firms. Compared to studies using macro data, our firm-level analysis allows us to control for firm and industry heterogeneity. Firm size and …
