  • Découvertes de fragments de navire (Saint-Gervais 9) sur les plages Saint-Gervais et du Cavaou, à Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône)

    Open Access•Sabrina Marlier, Frédéric Guibal•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2024

The Gulf of Fos ancient port complex, closely linked to the Roman colony of Arles, was one of the most important in the western Mediterranean Sea during the early Empire and, paradoxically, one of the most poorly known. The setting up of a collective research program on this complex was an opportunity to synthesise the abundant ancient documentation, a step prior to the launching of new field investigations. New explorations, excavations and surv…

  • La Giraglia, a dolia wreck of the 1st century BC from Corsica, France

    Open Access•Sabrina Marlier•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2002

During the early the Roman Empire, large quantities of olive oil and wine were exchanged between Rome and its provinces of Spain and Gaul. The majority was transported aboard ships in amphoras. There was also a short-lived type of vessel, known as a cistern-boat, that held large, globular jars, referred to as dolia. The jars were presumably placed in the hold as the ship was being built and were intended for bulk transport. About 10 dolia shipwre…
