  • Front-page illustrations and political powers in Early Modern Spanish journalism

    Open Access•Carmen Espejo-Cala, Francisco Baena Sánchez•ARTICLE•Culture & History Digital Journal•2021•References: 4

This paper explores the representation of political powers in the front-page illustrations of Early Modern Spanish newspapers. The knowledge about Early Modern European journalism has undergone a remarkable development in recent decades: however, research on the form of the first newspapers is scarce. The paper presents a corpus of 162 news pamphlets and gazettes published in Seville between 1618 and 1635. An analysis follows considering the pres…

  • El impresor sevillano Juan de Cabrera (1623-1631)

    Open Access•Carmen Espejo, Francisco Baena Sánchez•ARTICLE•Communication & Society•2016

In this paper, the production of the Seville printer Juan de Cabrera and his contemporaries (second and third decades of the 17th century) will be analysed to determine the strategies with which they managed to keep their readership supplied with news about international political developments (particularly about the War of Flanders): the use of the accounts of anonymous gazetteers – still unsubstantiated for this period – and the design innovati…

    Open Access•Carmen Espejo-Cala, Carmen Espejo et al.•ARTICLE•European Review•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In this paper we propose a methodological critique of the History of Early Modern Journalism. Our proposal recommends a review of the ‘micro’ concept applied to research in The History of Early Modern Journalism. The current study on the Gazeta de Roma in Valencia (1618–1620) is a sample of this microscopic procedure, and is an important and revealing example that enables us to reinterpret the concept of periodicity. We will discuss the value of …

Digital humanities offer new possibilities to do historical research on journalism in the Modern age. Based on the so-called digital history techniques and methods, we suggest a need to find new, uniform strategies that use the most commonly used standards and protocols in the international scholarly community, so we can construct digitally tagged corpora for future systematic analysis. We review the traditional criteria used to describe newsshee…

    Open Access•Francisco Baena Sánchez, Carmen Espejo-Cala•ARTICLE•Communication & Society•1970•References: 2
