  • Academia Europaea

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•2009

The Academia Europaea had its origin in a proposal that came in 1984 from the UK Department of Education and Science. This led to a Foundation Meeting in Cambridge in September 1988 attended by 54 of the Founding Members. They set up the formal framework and this provided the basis of the first Plenary Meeting held in London in June 1989

  • An explosive story

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•2004

Gunpowder was developed in the 13th century, as a result of the discovery of how to purify saltpetre. This led to the isolation of amyl nitrite, which turned out to be an effective treatment for angina pectoris. Nitroglycerine is not only a high explosive but also effective in treating angina. The search for an understanding of how it works in the body has led to the astonishing discovery that nitric oxide gas is actually produced in the body and…

  • St Anthony's gift

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•2003

Numerous outbreaks of a disease whose most prominent effects were gangrene and loss of limbs occurred in Europe in the Middle Ages. Sufferers sought relief at the shrine of St Anthony at Vienne in France. Quite early, it was recognized that the disease was a poisoning due to the consumption of bread prepared from rye contaminated with the fungus ergot. Many interesting substances have been isolated from ergot, some of which are used in medicine i…

  • Calcium, an earthy messenger in cells

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•2002

Calcium is the major messenger inside cells that is responsible for muscle contraction, secretion and many other processes. This article outlines some of features of these activities and reports on an Academia conference in Heidelberg, Germany

  • The United Kingdom and the reconstruction of German science

    Open Access•A Burgen, A S V Burgen•ARTICLE•Technology in Society•2001

  • Exact numbers

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•2000

The discovery of the inert gases is an excellent example of one variety of scientific investigation, where an increase in precision in methodology identifies a discrepancy that leads to a totally unpredicted, novel discovery

  • What does my left hand know

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•1999

Tiger, tiger burning bright In the forests of the night What immortal hand or eye Could frame your fearful symmetry Symmetry seems to be a desirable property, yet wherever we look we find asymmetry. This paper explores the presence and nature of asymmetry in biological systems

  • François Magendie and the new science of drugs

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•1996

The first pure drugs from plant sources were obtained early in the 19th century. Magendie saw them as the basis for the development of a scientific pharmacopoeia based exclusively on pure compounds and, by 1821, had produced the first textbook of pharmacology based on strict scientific principles

  • Information flow in the nervous system

    Open Access•A S V Burgen, ARNOLD BURGEN•ARTICLE•European Review•1993

Information is carried along nerve fibres by electrical pulses generated by ionic transfer; it is digitally coded. Information transfer between nerve cells depends on the release of a chemical transmitter which acts on specific receptors on the second neurone. This is a non-digital, analogue process which is highly non-linear. It involves the summation of inputs from highly divergent sources. In sensory systems such as vision, extensive compressi…
