Longitudinal changes in science identity, research self-efficacy, and academic self-concept for biomedical research trainees at a Hispanic-serving institution
Introduction This manuscript explores the development of key academic indicators among underrepresented minority students engaged in biomedical research training. Focusing on research trainees at a minority-majority Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), the study examines the structural changes and co-variation in student reported measures of science identity, research self-efficacy, and academic self-concept over two time points, spanning the begi…
Factors associated with applying to graduate/professional degrees for students engaged in undergraduate research experiences at minority serving institutions
Introduction: This study investigates the impact of undergraduate research experiences on applications to graduate and professional programs, particularly for underrepresented minority students at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Methods: The study analyzes data collected at 10 MSIs participating in the NIH BUILD program to understand the relationship between research participation (in formal programs vs. informal research), student demograp…
The Effects of Food Security on Academic Performance of University Students at a Hispanic-Serving Institution
Several studies find that low food security has negative effects on academic performance in higher education in the U.S., but the samples for these studies often have low percentages of Hispanic students. Consequently, it remains unclear if food security affects academic performance in predominantly Hispanic settings. Our study aims to analyze whether food security affects academic performance at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Using origin…
Food and housing security at a US Hispanic-Serving Institution
University students occupy a socially marginal position and therefore are often underserved by academic and service institutions. This article analyzes food and housing security among students at The University of Texas at El Paso, a Hispanic-Serving Institution located in the U.S.-Mexico Border region. Findings of a sample of n = 7,633 university students are presented in the first cross-sectional, two-year food and housing security study on cam…
Hispanic/Latinx STEM Majors Applying to Graduate School
This paper examines the critical transition from undergraduate to graduate biomedical education and focuses on Hispanic/Latinx students who participated in a biomedical undergraduate research program at a Hispanic-Serving Institution located on the US-Mexico border. We use the community cultural wealth (CCW) framework (Yosso, 2005) to analyze 13 qualitative interviews about students' experiences applying to graduate school in biomedical fields an…
Baseline Characteristics of the 2015-2019 First Year Student Cohorts of the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (Build ) Program
The DPC national evaluation has identified a large, longitudinal cohort of students with many from groups historically underrepresented in the biomedical sciences that will inform institutional/national policy level initiatives to help diversify the biomedical workforce
Latinx STEM Teacher Formation through a Cultural Wealth Lens
This study draws on the framework of cultural wealth to interpret ways in which Latinx science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) preservice teachers who participated in a National Science Foundation–funded Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship represent their motivation to become STEM teachers. Our analysis of in-depth interviews and one focus group with Noyce scholars revealed five sources of cultural capital: familial, aspirational, s…
Beliefs about Future Curriculum
This article investigates how emotions of avoidance affect curriculum choice in a science classroom and also evaluates a research-based social form of learning for changing emotions of avoidance towards a specific science topic (arachnids) for a population of preservice teachers. It was found that there is a strong invariant structural relationship between emotions of avoidance and beliefs about incorporation of science concepts about arachnids. …
