  • Magnetic and GPR Data Modelling via Multiscale Methods in San Pietro in Crapolla Abbey, Massa Lubrense (Naples)

    Open Access•Luigi Bianco, Mauro La Manna et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 2

We performed magnetic and GPR measurements to image the buried ruins of the Middle Age abbey San Pietro in Crapolla , on the Sorrento‐Amalfi Coast (Massa Lubrense, Southern Italy). The site represents an important religious location, which is nowadays partially buried along the cliff. An integrated study was necessary to map the buried structures and address the archaeological excavation. For this reason, we carried out the surveys on two main gr…

  • Bouguer gravity field of the Tuscan Archipelago (central Italy)

    Open Access•Maurizio Milano, I Pierri et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

In this paper, we present a new Bouguer gravity map of the Northern Tuscan offshore (central Italy), based on original gravity data acquired on the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Our dataset integrates 274 unpublished gravity field measurements with 126 available marine gravity data of the northern Tyrrhenian Sea. The Bouguer anomaly map shows a westward and southward increase of the regional gravity field associated with the uplift of the Mo…

  • Contour map of the top of the regional geothermal reservoir of Sicily (Italy)

Open Access•Domenico Montanari, Cinzia Albanese et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

An integrated review of existing geological and geophysical data – partly acquired during oil and gas exploration – combined with new data provided by deep geothermal studies of selected key areas, was used for the 3D modeling and mapping of the top of the geothermal reservoir developed at a regional scale in Sicily (Central Mediterranean). The resulting 1:500,000 scale map covers the area of the whole Sicily (about 25,700 km2) and is devoted to …

  • Characterizing Elements of Urban Planning in Magna Graecia Using Geophysical Techniques

    Open Access•Federico Cella, Valeria Paoletti et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 1

We present the results of a geophysical study at the site of Pian della Tirena , near the town of Nocera Terinese (Calabria, Italy). Geophysical imaging is a recent technique providing a reliable mapping of the three‐dimensional magnetization distribution below the ground and, thus, effectively estimating the depth of buried structures. The site studied gained archaeological interest following the hypothesis of the presence of two adjacent, but d…

  • The contribution of geophysical prospecting in the reconstruction of the buried ancient environments of the house of Marcus Fabius Rufus (Pompeii, Italy)

    Open Access•Rosa Di Maio, Maurizio Fedi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 9

An integrated geophysical study was carried out in a Roman house in the archaeological area of Pompeii (Italy). The house, once owned by Marcus Fabius Rufus, is an important architectural building overlooking a large garden that is likely to contain buried archaeological structures. The geophysical survey was planned to support an archaeological reconstruction of the residential complex, which was based on the assumption that the house was surrou…

  • GPR microwave tomography for diagnostic analysis of archaeological sites

Open Access•Raffaele Castaldo, Lorenzo Crocco et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2009•Cited by: 1

Interpretation of ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) data usually involves data processing similar to that used for seismic data analysis, including also migration techniques. Alternatively, in the past few years, microwave tomographic approaches exploiting more accurate models of the electromagnetic scattering have gained interest, owing to their capability of providing accurate results and stable images. Within this framework, this paper deals with…

  • Magnetic survey at the submerged archaeological site of Baia, Naples, southern Italy

    Open Access•Valeria Paoletti, M Secomandi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2005•Cited by: 6•References: 5

An application of magnetic survey to the submerged Roman ruins of the Bay of Baia, volcanic area of the Phlegrean Fields, Naples (southern Italy) is presented and discussed. The site of Baiae, one of the most extensive submerged archaeological sites known in Italy, is characterized by urban sites with residential houses, thermal baths, fisheries and harbour buildings. The survey was aimed to establish the typical magnetic signatures of building s…
