Journalism Versus Churnalism
This study evaluates the impact of news factors in press releases sent from scientific organizations on the representation of ocean plastic research in newspapers. We tracked 84 press releases discussing peer-reviewed ocean plastic studies, published between 2017 and 2021 on EurekAlert! and identified their presence in 495 English-language newspapers worldwide. Text comparison showed that press releases contribute highly to the construction of ne…
Factors affecting communication between transgender and non-binary individuals and general practitioners
Research shows that transgender and non-binary (TNB) individuals frequently experience discrimination and mistreatment in health care settings. These negative experiences cause TNB people to underutilize health care and, when they do utilize it, may affect communication of health information. Moving from social cognitive theory (SCT) and theory of planned behavior (TPB), this study investigated what factors influence pre-, during, and post physic…
Early Exposures to Ecogenomics
In the context of public introductions to emerging technologies, this study examined effects of priming and Web site interactivity on adolescents’ attitude development and information processing. In a four (priming) by three (interactivity levels) experiment, participants ( N = 273) were required to search for and process Web-based information about ecogenomics. Results showed that priming ecogenomics as biotechnology, ecology, economy, or scienc…
Adolescent responses toward a new technology
This paper reports on an exploratory study among adolescents ( N = 752) who were introduced to the emerging technology of ecogenomics for the first time. An online survey focused on their associations with the term ecogenomics, their planned information seeking behaviors if they were to acquire information about the new technology, and their first affective responses toward ecogenomics after having read some introductory information about it. Ado…
The Development of an Instrument To Determine Different Levels of Interactivity
Many researchers suggest that communication is most effective if a high level of interactivity between participants is involved. As yet, however, there is neither consensus on how interactivity is defined, nor on how it can be measured. The present study is aimed at finding an operational definition of interactivity that can be used in almost all communication contexts. Additionally, based primarily on three recent reviews on the concept, the stu…
