  • Multidimensional assessment of cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults

Open Access•Nobuko Shimizu, Noboru Hasegawa et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: Motor-cognitive dual-task performance is closely related to age-related changes in cognitive and motor function. Community-based approaches combining cognitive screening with neurophysiological and nutritional assessment may help characterize cognitive health in older adults. This study explored the feasibility of combining prefrontal oxygenated hemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) responses measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIR…

  • “The source of good forces is located in the east…”

    Open Access•Takako Yamada•ARTICLE•Quaestio Rossica•2015

This paper deals with the concept of the universe and belief in spiritual beings among contemporary Sakha (Yakut) shamans. It is based on field data collected in 1994 among several shamans of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). Since Soviet atheistic policy prohibited shamanic traditions, the idea of the universe and spiritual beings varies depending on the shaman’s own interpretations based on his or her own supernatural experiences. The paper argues …

    Takako Yamada•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The revival of rituals has been one of the serious concerns of indigenous peoples. This paper deals with cultural revitalization movements among the Sakha‐Yakut in eastern Siberia and the Ainu in Hokkaido. First, it examines the revival of rituals among the Sakha. The relationship between recent cultural revitalization movements and shamanism in a broad sense, as well as the revival of rituals, focussing especially on the ysyakh festival, are exa…

  • The Rulings of the Night

Takako Yamada, Yamada Takako et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Folklore Studies•1997

It is impossible to discuss what shamans are and what they do, contends Gregory G. Maskarinec, without knowing what shamans say. When Maskarinec took an interest in shaman rituals on his first visit to Nepal, he was told by many Nepalis and Westerners that the shamans he had encountered in the Himalayan foothills of western Nepal engaged in meaningless mumblings. But in the course of several years of fieldwork he learned from the shamans that bot…

  • Through Dialogue with Contemporary Yakut Shamans

    Open Access•Takako Yamada•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Consciousness•1996•Cited by: 4

In this article I indicate the revitalization of Yakut worldview based on dialogues with contemporary shamans in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in 1994. Dualistic views of the world are emerging: the real and the spiritual worlds, and the separate concepts of good and evil spiritual beings. Also, the relation between man and spiritual beings has become idealized as a symbiotic relation between man and nature. This new animistic idea has resulted…
