Political Unification and Regional Consequences of German East–West Migration
In 1989, with the collapse of Communist political systems, the East to West movement of the European population increased greatly in volume. Also during 1989, the year immediately preceding the unification of Germany, the stable migration systems of both the old Federal Republic of Germany and the former German Democratic Republic were transformed by large East–West German migration flows, and these large flows continued after unification. Political Unification and Regional Consequences of German East-West Migration
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of the post-unification East to West transfer of the German population on levels of spatial concentration and deconcentration in Eastern and Western Germany. Using 1991 internal migration data, it was found that German East-to-West migration served to deconcentrate regional population in the West, but concentrate population in the East. Regional variations in German East-to-West migration during…
Changing Western German Internal Migration Systems during the Second Half of the 1980s
The slow downward trend toward greater spatial deconcentration in West Germany during the time period 1970 to 1984 shifted back toward concentration from 1985 and through 1988. This 'swing back' occurred over only a three-year period. Regional labor-market changes appear to be the only factor able to cause such an abrupt shift to concentration, suggesting the importance of the regional restructuring hypothesis as an explanation. Changing internal…
