  • An Exploration of Sexual Victimization and Academic Performance Among College Women

    Open Access•Carol E Jordan, Jessica L Combs et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2014

The literature has documented the widespread nature of sexual assault victimization among college women. While the aftermath of violence against university women has also received focus, that is, documenting trauma-related sequelae; risk factors; reporting patterns; and legal interventions, the impact on academic performance has not received adequate attention in the literature. The primary purpose of this study was to explore the association of …

  • Individual differences in personality predict externalizing versus internalizing outcomes following sexual assault

Jessica L Combs, Carol E Jordan et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2013

For some women, the experience of being sexually assaulted leads to increases in externalizing behaviors, such as problem drinking and drug use; for other women, the experience of being assaulted leads to increases in internalizing distress like depression or anxiety. It is possible that pre-assault personality traits interact with sexual assault to predict externalizing or internalizing distress. We tested whether concurrent relationships among …

  • Building Academic Research Centers to Advance Research on Violence Against Women

    Open Access•Carol E Jordan•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2011

Research on violence against women is a highly complex field of study undertaken by multiple disciplines. While the field has benefited from the attention of disciplines across the university spectrum, it has not yet secured a mechanism to facilitate collaborations by these varied scholars, even though interdisciplinarity is known to create innovative and holistic knowledge and improve understanding of the most highly complex problems. This paper…

  • The University of Kentucky Center for Research on Violence Against Women

    Open Access•Carol E Jordan•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2011

Research in the violence against women area has been undertaken for more than 30 years, but individual researchers who have made these scholarly contributions have not been advantaged by adequate attention, funding, or organizational structure within the university setting. This article offers a detailed description of a model of an interdisciplinary research center designed to provide an academic architecture within which research on intimate pa…

  • Violence and Women's Mental Health

Carol E Jordan, Rebecca Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Clinical…•2010

The reach of violence against women (VAW) has been profoundly felt by women across the United States and around the globe. VAW has been documented for decades as a legal and social justice problem, but as illuminated in this review, it is also a substantial mental health concern. A full understanding of the phenomenon must include discussion of how often it occurs, in what forms, and to whom. This review defines violence against women in its vari…

  • Criminal Offending Among Respondents to Protective Orders

    Open Access•Carol E Jordan, Adam J Pritchard et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Research has shown that respondents to protective orders have robust criminal histories and that criminal offending behavior often follows issuance of a protective order. Nonetheless, the specific nature of the association between protective orders and criminal offending remains unclear. This study uses two classes of statistical models to more clearly delineate that relationship. The models reveal factors and characteristics that appear to be as…

    Open Access•John Briere, Carol E Jordan•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2009

This article reviews the complex relationship between child maltreatment and later psychosocial difficulties among adult women. Specifically addressed are (a) the various forms of childhood maltreatment, (b) the range of potential long-term psychological outcomes, and (c) important contextual variables that mediate or add to these maltreatment—symptom relationships. Among the latter are characteristics of the abuse and/or neglect; effects of impa…

  • Advancing the Study of Violence Against Women

    Open Access•Carol E Jordan•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2009

Decades of research produced by multiple disciplines has documented withering rates of violence against women in the United States and around the globe. To further an understanding of gendered violence, a field of research has developed, but recent critiques have highlighted weaknesses that inhibit a full scientific exploration of these crimes and their impacts. This review extends beyond prior reviews to explore the field's unique challenges, it…

  • Barriers to Services for Rural and Urban Survivors of Rape

    Open Access•Tk Logan, T K Logan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Interpersonal Violence•2005

A significant proportion of survivors of rape do not utilize formal services to cope with the aftermath of rape. Understanding victimization experiences in environments that differ on resources, such as rural versus urban areas, may be an important dimension to consider in understanding barriers. Thirty women (18 rural and 12 urban) were recruited from rape crisis centers to participate in focus groups. Study results suggest that (a) survivors of…

  • An Integrative Review of Separation in the Context of Victimization

Open Access•Robert Walker, Tk Logan et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2004

Given the number of divorces that occur each year as well as the high rates of intimate partner violence, it is critical that divorce/separation and victimization be considered in research and in clinical practice with women. However, the separation/divorce research and victimization research has often been conducted independently, with limited attention to integration. The integration of these two domains is critically important in facilitating …
