Exploring the complexities of infant feeding decisions for immigrant pregnant people living with HIV in Ontario, Canada
North American societies recommend that Pregnant People Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (PLWHIV) use formula to feed their infants to eliminate the risk of perinatal HIV transmission. However, many Canadian PLWHIV have migrated from HIV-endemic countries, where the World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding. These opposing recommendations, along with the complex interplay of social, cultural, and personal factors, creat…
Patterns of Antepartum Care in Ontario Before and During a Time of Covid-19 and Virtual Care
An evolutionary concept analysis
Stigma in the context of women living with HCV has its own unique antecedents, attributes, and consequences. This enhanced understanding of stigma among women living with HCV has the potential to inform improved and more effective approaches to care, which will be required to reach HCV elimination. Furthermore, this analysis identifies stigma layering and stigma in the direct-acting antiviral treatment era as areas for more in-depth future inquir…
Single-Centre Retrospective Cohort Study of Demographic Characteristics and Perinatal Outcomes in Pregnant Refugee Patients in Toronto, Canada
An exploration of the fertility desires and intentions of men living with HIV in Ontario, Canada
Planning families is an important issue within the HIV community. The primary objective of this study was to explore the fertility desires and intentions of men living with HIV (MLWH). A cross-sectional survey containing 77 questions in 10 domains was developed, validated and administered to MLWH. The sample was stratified by sexual orientation, ethnicity, and city of residence. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine sociodemogr…
Help-Seeking to Cope With Experiences of Violence Among Women Living With HIV in Canada
Using baseline data from a community-collaborative cohort of women living with HIV in Canada, we assessed the prevalence and correlates of help-seeking among 1,057 women who reported experiencing violence in adulthood (≥16 years). After violence, 447 (42%) sought help, while 610 (58%) did not. Frequently accessed supports included health care providers ( n = 313, 70%), family/friends ( n = 244, 55%), and non-HIV community organizations ( n = 235,…
Refugee mothers, migration pathways and HIV
Forced migration and extended time spent migrating may lead to prolonged marginalization and increased risk of HIV. We conducted a population-based cohort study to examine whether secondary migration status, where secondary migrants resided in a transition country prior to arrival in Ontario, Canada and primary migrants arrived directly from their country of birth, modified the relationship between refugee status and HIV. Unadjusted and adjusted …
Reproductive and Pregnancy Experiences of Diverse Sexual Minority Women
Access to fertility services in Canada for HIV-positive individuals and couples
In the modern era of HIV care, a multitude of clinical needs have emerged; one such need is the growing sub-specialty of HIV and reproductive health. In 2007, a study surveying Canadian fertility clinics found limited access to fertility services for HIV-positive patients. Given the extensive efforts made to address this lack of services, a follow-up assessment was warranted. This study aimed to compare the access to Canadian fertility clinics an…
Envisioning Women-Centered HIV Care
HIV and infant feeding in resource-rich settings
With advances in the care of HIV-positive pregnant women, the likelihood of perinatal transmission is now less than 1%. In resource-rich settings women are instructed to abstain from breastfeeding, as studies have shown that breastfeeding increases the likelihood of infant acquisition of HIV. As practitioners caring for HIV-positive parents, we are now facing growing tension about the complex issues that inform decisions about infant feeding. In …
Adequacy of prenatal care among women living with human immunodeficiency virus
Despite universal health care, disparities exist in the receipt of adequate prenatal care between women living with and without HIV. Interventions are required to ensure that women with HIV receive timely and adequate prenatal care
Access to conception planning information and services for people living with HIV in Ontario, Canada
Decreased mortality, decreased risk of vertical HIV transmission, and many people living with HIV (PLWHIV) being of reproductive age have led many PLWHIV to consider pregnancy. However, scarce data exist regarding the conception planning resources required and available for PLWHIV to have safe and healthy pregnancies. This study aimed to identify gaps between the need for, knowledge of, and access to conception planning information and services a…
