  • A qualitative exploration into staff perceptions of barriers faced by domestic abuse victims in engaging with the criminal justice system in Scotland

Samantha Gray, Lee John Curley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychiatry, Psychology and Law•2026

Despite a current focus on prosecuting domestic abuse (DA) cases in Scotland, there remains a disparity between newly implemented legislation and the engagement of domestic abuse victims (DAV). There are numerous barriers that DAV face when engaging with the criminal justice system (CJS). Additionally, there are currently no studies utilising Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Staff (COPFS) to assess DAV engagement with the criminal justice syste…

  • They were just enjoying love and she was making money’

Open Access•Samantha Gray, Sandrine Lusamba et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2025

The zero-tolerance policy fails to recognize the nuanced range of diverse and dynamic sexual interactions between UN peacekeepers and host community members in the DRC. It is recommended that SEA reporting measures be reconfigured in light of this complexity, and we suggest a non-binary method of measuring the degree of exploitation and abuse. Accepting that sexual interactions between host community members and UN peacekeepers represent varying …

  • Factors associated with self-isolating and completing a contact follow-up program

Open Access•Justin Thielman, Celina Degano et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

In preparing for future pandemics, contact tracing programs may benefit from prioritizing additional supports for those who live in areas with fewer material resources, have language preferences other than English, and live in large metropolitan centres

  • American anti-intellectualism and the female genius in the work of Aaron Sorkin

    Open Access•Samantha Gray•ARTICLE•Northern Lights Film and Media…•2022

Anti-intellectualism in America not only has a long and established history but has seen an increasing rise in recent years. The figure of the ‘genius’ archetype on popular television has frequently been presented through a lens of anti-intellectualism, leading intellectualism to be read as an illness or disorder. The works of Aaron Sorkin have taken a different position, and, rather than distancing the audience from these geniuses by presenting …

  • Youth gun carrying and household firearm ownership in 22 US states

    Open Access•L R Chavez, Leo Chavez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 52

Youth gun carrying is associated with a range of adverse outcomes, including increased risks for homicide, suicide, school disciplinary problems, and criminal legal involvement. In this study we examined the association between state‐level household firearm ownership rates and the odds of past‐year gun carrying among high‐school‐aged youth. Using survey‐weighted multivariable logistic regression models, results showed that each 1% point increase …

  • A cross-sectional study of community perceptions of stigmatization amongst women affected by UN-peacekeeper perpetrated sexual exploitation and abuse

Open Access•Samantha Gray, Susan A Bartel et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Women/girls with high exposure levels to UN peacekeeper-perpetrated SEA are at the highest risk of public and structural stigmatization, which should be more routinely considered when conceptualizing the consequences of SEA in peacekeeping contexts. The frequent occurrence of both public and structural stigma, coupled with the varying perceptions by sex, demonstrates the need for a multi-faceted approach for stigma reduction

  • Development of an Index to Measure the Exposure Level of UN Peacekeeper-Perpetrated Sexual Exploitation/Abuse in Women/Girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Open Access•Samantha Gray, Heather Stuart et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2021•References: 5

Sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) of women and girls by United Nations (UN) peacekeepers is an international concern. However, the typical binary measurement of SEA (indicating that it occurred, or it did not) disregards varying exposure levels and the complex circumstances surrounding the interaction. To address this gap, we constructed an index to quantify the degree to which local women and girls were exposed to UN-peacekeeper perpetrated SE…
