Trajectories and inequalities in routine healthcare uptake from adolescence to retirement
Background Regular uptake of routine healthcare services can support disease prevention, early detection, monitoring, and timely treatment. Socioeconomically disadvantaged populations often face barriers to healthcare use. However, little is known about how routine healthcare uptake, and inequalities within it, unfold across the life course, or whether these trajectories differ by gender and birth cohort. Methods We used retrospectively collected…
‘A gendered family affair’? Examining the role of partners', parents', and parents-in-law's education in preventive healthcare use among older men and women
This study aims to extend the body of research on educational inequalities in preventive healthcare practices among older adults, and their intergenerational reproduction, by investigating the role of family spillovers. Beyond the influence of individuals' own education, we examine how partner's, parents', and parents-in-law's educational attainment relate to participation in colorectal cancer screening and flu vaccination, with particular attent…
Cancer screening outside of age recommendations
Cancer screening outside of recommendations is highly prevalent, particularly among older adults. Further research is needed to better understand drivers of this form of low-value care
Estimating 10-year risk of lung and breast cancer by occupation in Switzerland
Introduction: Lung and breast cancer are important in the working-age population both in terms of incidence and costs. The study aims were to estimate the 10-year risk of lung and breast cancer by occupation and smoking status and to create easy to use age-, and sex-specific 10-year risk charts. Methods: New lung and breast cancer cases between 2010 and 2014 from all 5 cancer registries of Western Switzerland, matched with the Swiss National Coho…
Do Welfare Regimes Moderate Cumulative Dis/advantages Over the Life Course? Cross-National Evidence from Longitudinal SHARE Data
Our research did not find evidence of cumulative disadvantage with aging in the studied life-course characteristics and age range. Instead, trajectories showed narrowing differences with differing patterns across welfare regimes
Life Course Socioeconomic Conditions and Frailty at Older Ages
Findings suggest that CSC are associated with frailty at old age. However, when taking into account ASC, this association no longer persists. The results show the importance of improving socioeconomic conditions over the whole life course in order to reduce health inequalities in old age
Life-Course Circumstances and Frailty in Old Age Within Different European Welfare Regimes
These findings suggest that childhood misfortune is linked to frailty in old age. Such a disadvantaged start in life does not seem to be compensated by a person's life-course socioeconomic trajectory, though certain types of welfare regimes affected this relationship. Apart from main occupational position, our findings do not support the cumulative dis/advantage theory, but rather show narrowing differences
