  • Bilingualism reduces associations between cognition and the brain at baseline, but does not show evidence of cognitive reserve over time

Open Access•Meghan R Elliott, Dan Mungas et al.•ARTICLE•Bilingualism Language and Cognition•2025

Studies suggest that bilingualism may be associated with better cognition, but the role of active bilingualism, the daily use of two languages, on cognitive trajectories remains unclear. One hypothesis is that frequent language switching may protect cognitive trajectories against effects of brain atrophy. Here, we examined interaction effects between language and brain variables on cognition among Hispanic participants at baseline (N = 153) and l…

  • Recommended best practices for construct-centered adaptation of the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol

    Open Access•Emily M Briceño, Darina T Bassil et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025

The HCAP neuropsychological assessment approach has unique considerations for adaptation that balance the needs of local validity with cross-national harmonization. Shared best practices for HCAP adaptation will improve the quality of cross-national HCAP data collection, data harmonization, analyses, and inferences. The HCAP is a useful model for cross-nationally harmonized data collection and research to improve our understanding of cognitive ag…

  • Prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment in the Mexican population

Open Access•Silvia Mejia-Arango, Miguel Arce Rentería et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025

Leveraging the nationally-representative and comprehensive cognitive data in Mex-Cog, an algorithm-derived classification of dementia and MCI provided the prevalence of dementia and MCI in Mexico. Besides the association with cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease, the effect of education, rural residence, and lack of health insurance suggests an unequal burden of MCI and dementia among the aging Mexican population

  • Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol

    Open Access•Alden L Gross, Sneha Mani et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 3

We advocate for the HCAP as a structured yet adaptable framework that prioritizes measurement precision and cultural relevance, while retaining sufficient uniformity to conduct statistical harmonization across settings. What makes an HCAP an HCAP is not a strict checklist of tests, but a commitment to rigorous, culturally respectful measurement of cognitive health in older adults around the world

  • Aging and HIV/Aids

Monica Rivera Mindt, Caitlin Miranda et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2014

In recent years, HIV/AIDS populations have become older and increasingly more ethnically diverse. Concurrently, the prevalence of HIV-related neurocognitive (NC) impairment remains high. This study examined the effects of age and ethnicity on NC function in HIV-positive adults. The sample (N = 126; 84 Latina/o and 42 Non-Hispanic White) completed a comprehensive NC battery. Global NC and domain average demographically-corrected t-scores were gene…
