The long-term impact of childhood peer relationships on disability in later life
Despite the recognized importance of social connections in Chinese culture, research on how childhood peer relationship deficits impact health later in life has been limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between childhood peer relationship deficits and the odds of disability among older Chinese adults and to explore the potential mediating roles of social isolation, loneliness, and cognitive function. Using the longitudinal sam…
Association of Childhood Friendship Experience and Depressive Symptoms Among Older Adults
Friendship experiences during childhood were related to the risk of depressive symptoms in older Chinese adults; more importantly, social disconnectedness and cognitive function partially mediated this association. Thus, improving social engagement and cognitive function in older adults could alleviate the accumulated disadvantages due to childhood friendship deficits and help to improve their psychological well-being
Hypothetical Interventions on Risk Factors for Cognitive Impairment among Chinese Older Adults
The effects of psychosocial and dietary interventions on risk of cognitive impairment is not known. The aim of this study was to estimate the 10-year risks of cognitive impairment under hypothetical interventions of psychosocial factors and dietary intake among Chinese older adults. A sample of 7377 respondents aged 65 and over was drawn from the last four waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 2002 to 2011/2012. The para…
The Association Between Loneliness and Cognitive Impairment among Older Men and Women in China
We aimed to investigate the association between loneliness and cognitive impairment among older men and women in China. Data for 6898 eligible participants aged 65 years and older were derived from the latest two waves (2008/2009 and 2011/2012) of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine whether the association between loneliness at baseline and the risk of cognitive impairment a…
Social Engagement and Cognitive Impairment in Older Chinese Adults
Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the association between social engagement and cognitive impairment with psychological well-being (PWB) as a mediator in older Chinese adults and to further test the gender differences in this association. Method: Data were drawn from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey of older Chinese adults, aged 65 and older ( N = 6,998). The total effect was decomposed into direct and indirec…
Application of SCM with Bayesian B-Spline to Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Hypertension in China
Most previous research on the disparities of hypertension risk has neither simultaneously explored the spatio-temporal disparities nor considered the spatial information contained in the samples, thus the estimated results may be unreliable. Our study was based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), including residents over 12 years old in seven provinces from 1991 to 2011. Bayesian B-spline was used in the extended shared component mod…
The Digital Divide and Health Disparities in China
BACKGROUND: The digital divide persists despite broad accessibility of mobile tools. The relationship between the digital divide and health disparities reflects social status in terms of access to resources and health outcomes; however, data on this relationship are limited from developing countries such as China. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the current rates of access to mobile tools (Internet use and mobile phone ownership) …
