  • Growth of Very Preterm Infants in a Low-Resourced Rural Setting after Affiliation with a Human Milk Bank

    Open Access•Chia-Huei Chen, Hui-Ya Chiu et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

The extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR) of very preterm infants has been associated with long-term complications and neurodevelopmental problems. EUGR has been reported at higher rates in low resource settings. There is limited research investigating how metropolitan human milk banks contribute to the growth outcomes of very preterm infants cared in rural areas. The setting of this study is located at a rural county in Taiwan and affiliated wi…

  • Massive Gastric Hemorrhage after Indomethacin Therapy

    Open Access•Yen‐Ju Chen, Yen-Ju Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Indomethacin has been widely used in preterm infants with hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Gastrointestinal complications of indomethacin have been reported in 5% of treated neonates. However, massive gastric mucosa hemorrhage is a rarely reported complication. To the best of our knowledge, the infant in this report is the smallest reported in the literature to have undergone successful surgery for such a complication. …

  • Respiratory Trajectory after Invasive Interventions for Patent Ductus Arteriosus of Preterm Infants

    Open Access•Yu‐Jen Wei, Yen‐Ju Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Invasive interventions have been conducted in preterm infants with significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) when medical treatment has failed, and methods of invasive intervention have been reported. Surgical ligation via lateral thoracotomy has been a well-established procedure for decades. Recently, transcatheter occlusion has been safely and feasibly applied to the premature population. However, little research has been conducted on the bene…

  • Improved Survival of Periviable Infants after Alteration of the Threshold of Viability by the Neonatal Resuscitation Program 2015

    Open Access•Yen‐Ju Chen, Yen-Ju Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Periviable infants (PIs) born at 22-25 weeks gestational age (wGA) have a variable survival rate (49.7-86.2%) among hospitals. One factor involved in this difference may be the definition of the threshold of viability. The American Academy of Pediatrics revised the neonatal resuscitation program in late 2015 (NRP 2015) and altered the threshold of viability from 23 to 22 wGA. The impact on the survival of PIs after the guideline alteration has se…

  • Reduced Ability to Detect Facial Configuration in Middle-Aged and Elderly Individuals

Daniel Norton, Ryan K McBain et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2009

Visual sensitivity decreases with age, and this presumably has an impact on face recognition. However, the relationship between aging in basic visual processing and in the sensory and cognitive mechanisms mediating face recognition is not well understood. Face detection, a foundational step in recognizing faces, relies primarily on sensory information. This study measured the ability to detect facial configuration and contrast detection in young …
