Perceived Control, Cognitive Training, and Incident Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias in the Active Study
Objectives Greater perception of control over important life outcomes has been linked to better cognitive performance and greater benefits from cognitive training interventions among older adults. However, it is not yet known whether perceived control predicts incident Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) or influences links between cognitive training and ADRD incidence. Methods Data were obtained from 2,021 participants in the Advanc…
Social support moderates association between area deprivation index and changes in physical health among adults in the Baltimore Study of Black Aging (BSBA)
Despite the association of neighborhood quality with poorer adult health, limited research has explored the association between neighborhood disadvantage, e.g. Area Deprivation Index (ADI), and older Black adults' health, prospectively. This observational study examined the association between ADI and changes in longitudinal physical health within older Black adults. The analytic sample ( n = 317) included data from waves 1 & 2 of the Baltimore S…
Effects of Cognitive Training on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias
Objective: We examined whether social determinants of health (SDoH) are associated with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk and the effects of cognitive training over a 20-year follow-up period. Methods: Data were obtained from 1605 participants in ACTIVE. SDoH measures were created using baseline data at the individual and neighborhood level. Incident ADRD was defined using administrative claims data (1999-2019). Cause-specific…
Associations Between Body Mass Index and Cognitive Change in the Active Study
Objectives: The current study examines relationships between Body Mass Index (BMI) and cognitive performance and change in processing speed, memory, and reasoning, while accounting for variations by race and the influence of social determinants of health. Methods: Secondary data analysis of the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study, which included participants who self-identified as African American or Black…
The influence of social status and identity in a struggle for matriarchal power
The Genesis 16 narrative is a story about power afforded to individuals based on social status and identity. As such, modern readings of Gen 16 (and Gen 21) unsurprisingly informed the genesis of womanist theology. In her seminal text, Sisters in the Wilderness: The Challenge of Womanist God-Talk, Delores Williams offers a theological perspective centering the social and historical experiences of Black women in biblical and theological interpreta…
The Relationship Between Cognition and Mortality Among Older Black and White Men in Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly
Objective : To determine the association between baseline cognition and all-cause mortality among Black men and White men. Methods : Data were from 614 Black and White men aged ≥65 years at baseline in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly trial and their linked mortality information. Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine the association between baseline cognition (memory, reasoning, speed of processin…
Differential Associations Between the Area Deprivation Index and Measures of Physical Health for Older Black Adults
The findings suggest that national- and state-level place-based characteristics should be considered along with individual-level factors, which can enrich the scientific understanding of how neighborhood characteristics relate to varying health indicators among older Black adults
Do Associations Between Vascular Risk and Mild Cognitive Impairment Vary by Race
Objectives: Given prevalence differences of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among Black and white older adults, this study aimed to examine whether overall vascular risk factor (VRF) burden and individual VRF associations with amnestic (aMCI) and nonamnestic (naMCI) MCI status varied by Black/white race. Methods: Participants included 2755 older adults without dementia from the ACTIVE study. Comprehensive neuropsychological criteria were used to …
The Association between Subjective Memory Complaints and Sleep within Older African American Adults
Evaluation of sleep may be warranted when older adults, particularly African Americans, communicate concerns regarding their memory. Insufficient sleep may be a useful marker of acute daytime dysfunction and, perhaps, cognitive decline. Given memory problems are the hallmark of dementia, our findings support further evaluation of whether poor sleep can aid in the diagnosis of cognitive impairment
Intervention Markers of Physical Activity Maintenance in Older Adults
Specific goal-setting behaviors and social support from family/friends may be key elements of physical activity maintenance in older adults
Perceived Control Predicts Pulse Pressure in African American Men
These findings suggest that greater belief in one's own efficacy is a protective factor for cardiovascular health among African American men. Future research should examine whether enhancing perceived control can have an appreciable impact on the immense CVD burden in this and other at-risk populations
Cognition and Health in African American Men
Results suggest that lung function is important to consider when examining cognitive function in African American men. Understanding the role of health in cognition and implications for quality of life in this population will be critical as life expectancies increase
Education Desegregation and Cognitive Change in African American Older Adults
Overall, these findings suggest a slight advantage of desegregated schooling for cognitive performance, but no advantage of desegregated schooling on the rate of cognitive change over time in this sample
Personality as a source of individual differences in cognition among older African Americans
