Modifiable Risk Factors for Cognitive Decline in Community-Dwelling Older Adults Differ by Sex and Apoe4
Objectives The extent to which lifestyle shapes trajectories of normal cognitive aging, and the factors with highest potential for mitigating cognitive decline, remain poorly characterized. Methods Participants of the Rancho Bernardo Study underwent demographic, health, and behavioral characterization at baseline, along with up to 7 cognitive assessments over a 27-year follow-up period. Factor analysis of 24 baseline risk variables identified 9 c…
Sex Differences in the Association of Framingham Cardiac Risk Score With Cognitive Decline in Community-Dwelling Elders Without Clinical Heart Disease
OBJECTIVE: To investigate a possible link between cardiovascular risk factors and age-related cognitive decline, the association of the 1998 Framingham Cardiac Risk Score (FCRS) with the trajectory of cognitive function test (CFT) performance over an 18 year period was examined in adults 50 years and older without clinical heart disease at baseline. METHODS: Participants were 985 men and women who had assessments of cognitive function at 3- to 4-…
Life-style and death patterns of the Missouri RLDS church members
Members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (RLDS) are dissuaded from the use of tobacco, alcohol, and hot drinks. A well-balanced diet is also stressed. This study compares the 1972-78 mortality experience of the Missouri RLDS with three other population groups. The findings show Missouri RLDS experiencing age-adjusted death rates which are 22.6 percent lower than rates for Missouri non-RLDs whites; 19.6 per cent lower…
