  • Food insecurity and sleep deficiency among older Filipinos

    Open Access•Divine Grace C Domingo, D Domingo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: Although research has shown that food insecurity may lead to sleep problems due to poor mental health, it remains unclear whether physical health mediates this relationship. We investigated whether depressive symptoms and frailty phenotypes mediated the association of food insecurity with sleep deficiency among community-dwelling older adults in the Philippines. Methods: We analysed data from the baseline survey of a longitudinal stud…

  • Sex differences in the risk factors of disability among community-dwelling older adults with hypertension

Open Access•Utoomporn Wongsin, Tuo-Yu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background Hypertension poses a serious health problem among Thai older adults which could subsequently lead to disability. However, little to no research has been conducted to understand modifiable risk factors of disability among community-dwelling older adults with hypertension in Thailand. In addition, sex is an important social determinant of health, but its role in disability among older adults with hypertension is less clear. Objectives Th…

  • Change in Leisure Participation among Older Adults after Falling

    Tuo-Yu Chen, Tuo‐Yu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2022•References: 53

Falls among older adults can lead to severe physical and psychological consequences. However, whether leisure participation changes after falling is not clear. We investigated whether falls resulted in reduced leisure participation in terms of duration, number, and intensity among older adults. Secondary data from the Health and Retirement Study and the Consumption and Activities Mail Survey (n = 1163) were analyzed. The results showed falls did …

  • Going Online to Stay Connected

    Open Access•Shannon Ang, Tuo-Yu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Findings show that online social participation can alleviate the negative effects of pain on mental well-being, and suggest that online social participation can supplement attempts to maintain offline social participation in later life, especially for those whose social activity may be limited by pain

  • Cognitive Function as a Prospective Predictor of Falls

    T Y Chen, Tuo‐Yu Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Although cognitive measures at baseline were significantly associated with falls and recurrent falls at follow-up, these measures did not predict falling after considering known risk factors of falls and psychomotor speed. Thus, it may be that simple measures of psychomotor speed are more salient predictors of falls than cognitive measures
