Longitudinal Associations Between Psychological Resilience and Cognitive Function
Objectives Reductions in psychological resilience and declining cognition are common among older adults. Understanding the longitudinal association between them could be beneficial for interventions that focus on age-related cognitive and psychological health. In this study, we evaluated the longitudinal associations between cognition and psychological resilience over time in a nationally representative sample of U.S. older adults. Methods A tota…
The Implementation of a Primary Care-Based Integrated Mobile Health Intervention for Stroke Management in Rural China
Background: There is a lack of evidence concerning the effective implementation of strategies for stroke prevention and management, particularly in resource-limited settings. A primary-care-based integrated mobile health intervention (SINEMA intervention) has been implemented and evaluated via a 1-year-long cluster-randomized controlled trial. This study reports the findings from the trial implementation and process evaluation that investigate th…
Living With Cognitive Impairment in China
China has experienced a substantial increase in the number of older adults with dementia and milder forms of cognitive impairment. Being spouses of Persons with cognitive impairment (PWCI) and living with them for several decades does not necessarily mean that it is easier for them to provide person-centered care and maintain a valued and healthy relationship. The current study explored how elements of PCC, as operationalized by the Senses Framew…
The Cumulative Impact of Chronic Stressors on Risks of Myocardial Infarction in US Older Adults
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between cumulative exposure to chronic stressors and the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) in US older adults. METHODS: Nationally representative prospective cohort data of adults 45 years and older (n = 15,109) were used to investigate the association between the cumulative number of chronic stressors and the incidence of MI in US older adults. Proportional hazards models adjusted …
Age at Migration and Cognitive Health Among Chinese Older Immigrants in the United States
Objectives: This study addressed two questions: (1) Is age at migration associated with cognitive function among Chinese older immigrants? and (2) what personal and environmental factors confound the above relationship? Methods: Data were derived from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly ( N = 2957). Quantile and linear regressions were used to examine the associations between age at migration and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and globa…
Gender differences in quality of life among community-dwelling older adults in low- and middle-income countries
This study provides a better understanding of QoL among older adults in LMICs, which can help prepare LMICs to better address the QoL of older adults. The results of this study can be used to develop programs to promote better living standards and services to reduce gender disparities and ultimately, to improve the QoL among older adults in LMICs
Acceptance of Love and Remarriage Among Older Adults in the Philippines
Objectives: Later-life re-partnership has been linked to healthy aging, but little is known about Philippine older adults' perception of love and remarriage in older age. Methods: Using two nationally representative surveys on aging in the Philippines, we estimated the proportion of older adults reporting acceptance. Using weighted logistic regression, we assessed sociodemographic and health factors associated with acceptance as well as the relat…
Validating a Scale of Health Beliefs in Preventive Health Screenings Among Chinese Older Adults
We aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a modified 16-item Attitudinal Index (AI), a measure of Chinese older adults’ beliefs about preventive health screenings. We used the 2013 Shanghai Elderly Life and Opinion data including 3,418 respondents age 60+ who were randomly split into training and validation samples. We examined the validity and reliability of the modified AI. Psychometric evaluation of the modified AI revealed good respo…
Self–reported diabetes education among Chinese middle–aged and older adults with diabetes
BACKGROUND: To compare self-reported diabetes education among Chinese middle-aged and older adults with diabetes in three population groups: urban residents, migrants in urban settings, and rural residents. METHODS: We used data from the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The sample included 993 participants age 45 and older who reported having diabetes diagnosed from a health professional. We performed multilevel regressions pe…
