Time, Seawalls, and Money
This article explores the anthropological and social scientific literature on sea level rise and coastal erosion, examining questions of time, the human dimensions of seawalls, tensions over relocation and retreat, and the politics of finance. This includes insights from the author's research in Baja California Sur, Mexico, and along the California coast in the United States, where locally based experiences illustrate not only the challenges of r…
Settlement Chronology and Subsistence Patterns in Cabo Pulmo, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP), within the East Cape of Baja California Sur, Mexico, is the location of a highly productive rocky reef ecosystem that was likely attractive to people throughout the Holocene. AMS radiocarbon dates from sites along the coast and faunal data from two excavated sites, D20 and D27, indicate people were present in the region by at least 7120–6755 cal b.p. (D34), but evidence of persistent occupation and possibly higher…
Pearls before swine flu
This article employs a long-term historical and anthropological perspective to examine questions of resilience through a case study of Cabo Pulmo, BCS, Mexico. Using the recent COVID-19 crisis as a starting point, this article discusses the crises, shocks, booms, and busts that have affected and shaped the people, landscapes, and ecologies of the coastline that now includes Cabo Pulmo. While the community of Cabo Pulmo has been able to withstand …
The taboo of retreat
This article uses anthropological and historical perspectives to explore ongoing conflicts over "managed retreat" and property values along the California coast. Proponents of managed retreat argue that coastal communities need to start planning for the impending effects of sea level rise, including retreating or relocating away from vulnerable coastal spaces. Some residents and organizations oppose such measures, often citing the need to protect…

Beyond “Success”
This paper uses Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP) as a case study to examine the successes and challenges of Marine Protected Area (MPA) design, conception, and long-term governance. Drawing from literature in environmental anthropology, political ecology, and conservation, the author argues for a renewed examination of the ‘success’ of CPNP that pays greater attention to the relationship between socio-political factors (e.g. access, ownership, par…

Roads, value, and dispossession in Baja California Sur, Mexico
This article utilizes theories of value and space, along with Harvey's notion of "accumulation by dispossession," to critically investigate the histories and social effects of the commodification of place on the East Cape of Baja California Sur, Mexico. The article defines value as the product of specific social relations and examines how places are created, valued, commodified, and co-opted in the development process. The actual process of co-op…

Sustainability, ideology, and the politics of development in Cabo Pulmo, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Based upon twelve months of anthropological fieldwork in Cabo Pulmo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, this article uses political ecology and theoretical work on ideology to examine how local residents use the concept of sustainability to advocate for alternative visions of development. Conceptually, the idea of sustainability has a long, often conflicted history. As political ecologists have pointed out, sustainability can be everything from a tool …
