Applying a multi-layered, mixed methods approach to evaluate technology and workforce interventions in Kenyan neonatal units
Understanding how to best implement healthcare innovations in resource-poor settings requires complex interventions and evaluations, often straining existing healthcare systems. We aimed to address this challenge in our Kenyan neonatal intervention research by deeply integrating stakeholder engagement, applying layered methodologies, and leveraging our research team's diverse expertise. This paper reports on the design and implementation of a res…
Emotional dimensions of nurses’ daily work in newborn units in Kenya
We draw on our data, the wider literature, and nurses' recommendations to reflect on the interplay between emotional well-being and ethical nursing practice, and to make suggestions for ongoing health system strengthening efforts
Scoping review of interventions to improve continuity of postdischarge care for newborns in LMICs
INTRODUCTION: Neonatal mortality remains significant in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) with in-hospital mortality rates similar to those following discharge from healthcare facilities. Care continuity interventions have been suggested as a way of reducing postdischarge mortality by better linking care between facilities and communities. This scoping review aims to map and describe interventions used in LMICs to improve care contin…
Young people’s perceptions of smartphone-enabled self-testing and online care for sexually transmitted infections
Remote STI self-testing and online care appealed to these young people. It addressed barriers they associated with conventional STI services, thus may benefit public health through earlier detection and treatment. Our findings underpin development of online care pathways, as part of ongoing research to create this complex e-health intervention
Examining the potential public health benefit of offering STI testing to men in amateur football clubs
Relative to young men in the general population, football club members who completed the SPORTSMART survey reported greater sexual risk behaviour but similar STI/HIV risk perception and STI testing history. Offering STI testing in amateur football clubs may therefore widen access to STI testing and health promotion messages for men at higher STI risk, which, given the minority currently testing and the popularity of football in England, should yi…
Why MSM in Rural South African Communities Should be an HIV Prevention Research Priority
Research into HIV and men who have sex with men's (MSM) health in South Africa has been largely confined to the metropolitan centres. Only two studies were located making reference to MSM in rural contexts or same-sex behaviors among men in the same. There is growing recognition in South Africa that MSM are not only disproportionately affected by HIV and have been underserved by the country's national response, but that they contribute significan…
The Invisible Body of Queer Youth
How does complexity in gender and sexual identity construction and partnering practices generate unique vulnerabilities for queer-identified youth? We present two case studies from an ongoing ethnographic study of LGBTQ youth development: "Samantha," a queer-identified woman partnered with a transgender man, and "Reid," a queer-identified transgender man who has declined medical gender transitioning and who partners with lesbians and gay men. We …
