Major curricula as structures for disciplinary acculturation that contribute to student minoritization
Institutions of higher learning are characterized by multiple, often intersecting, social-educational structures aimed at regulating the conditions by which a degree is ultimately granted. The sequence of courses that students must take for a degree is one such structure. Building on the Sloan Equity and Inclusion in STEM Introductory Courses (SEISMIC) Collaboration’s prior work, we provide a comparative view of students’ pathways through selecte…
Advanced placement course credit and undergraduate student success in gateway science courses
Approximately 2 million students take Advanced Placement (AP) examinations annually. However, departmental policies that allow students to replace introductory courses with AP credit greatly vary within and across universities, even across relatively similar universities. This study examines the impact of AP credit policies on second‐course success in introductory Biology, Chemistry, and Physics course sequences at six large public research unive…

History and scope of environmental anthropology
Environmental Anthropology is the general designation for the anthropological investigation of human–environment relationships. This chapter begins with a brief discussion about the evolution of terminology as applied to Environmental Anthropology and fields of specialization within it. Wild Deer, Multivalence, and Institutional Adaptation
"In Britain, wild deer can be conceptualised as a commons, although a complex institutional structure - founded largely upon land- ownership and notions of stalking rights - has evolved over several hundred years to regulate access to this resource. In recent decades, however, a number of socio-political, economic and ecological factors have fundamentally altered the nature of wild deer as a resource, introducing new impacts along with new intera…
Ethnicity and Evolution of the Biodemographic Structure of Arbëreshe and Italian Populations of the Pollino Area, southern Italy (1820-1984)
In the present study, we show how, through time, an ethnic mosaic and a changing social and economic context translated into intrapopulation differentiation and a change in genetic barriers between populations. Surname analysis was applied to a sample drawn from two centuries of marriage records in ten Arbëreshe and nine Italian villages of southern Italy to evaluate the evolution of internal differentiation and changes in genetic relationships b…
