The sleep justice study - a prospective cohort study assessing sleep as a cardiometabolic risk factor after incarceration
The incarceration of millions of poor and minoritized groups presents an urgent need to understand how incarceration affects CVD epidemiology. This study will improve our understanding of sleep health among people released from carceral facilities and its potential relationship to CVD risk factor control. Using subjective and objective measures of sleep will allow us to identify unique targets to improve sleep health and mitigate cardiovascular r…
A prospective cohort study examining exposure to incarceration and cardiovascular disease (Justice-Involved Individuals Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology – Justice study)
Our study will identify factors associated with CVD risk factor control among people released from incarceration. Our measurement of incarceration-related exposures, psychosocial factors, and clinical measures of cardiovascular risk will allow for identification of unique targets for intervention to modify CVD risk in this vulnerable population
Connecticut’s Family Assessment Response system
This study describes the family characteristics, prevalence of risk factors, and explores factors associated with subsequent and substantiated subsequent reports of child abuse/neglect for the differential response track in Connecticut, Family Assessment Response (FAR). Results indicated that while relatively low risk, FAR serves families with significant issues. The results underscore the need for accessible and effective mental health and behav…
Effects of social support and conflict on parenting among homeless mothers
Research has shown that having a supportive social network is generally beneficial for individuals, particularly those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. However, conflict within these networks may diminish the positive effects of social support on well-being, and these effects may be felt acutely within a vulnerable population with multiple needs. This study examined the impact of conflict and social support on parenting behaviors in a…
Applying Classification and Regression Tree Analysis to Identify Prisoners with High HIV Risk Behaviors
Among prisoners, past research has associated several factors with HIV risk behaviors, including illicit drug use, engaging in sex trade, older age (for drug-related risk), younger age (for sex-related risk), low education, low income, type of offense, history of abuse, mental health disorders, vulnerability and low self-perceived efficacy. This study employs data collected through the Transitional Case Management study of the Criminal Justice Dr…
Ethnic differences in the effects of spiritual well-being on long-term psychological and behavioral outcomes within a sample of homeless women
The present study examines ethnicity as a moderator variable between spiritual well-being (SWB) and psychological and behavioral outcomes. Participants included in this analysis were 88 African American (46.6%) and 101 non-African American (total N = 189) homeless mothers. Through structured interviews conducted at 3-month intervals over a period of 15 months, data were collected on spiritual well-being, mental health, trauma symptoms, substance …
