They called it democracy? The aesthetic politics of the Spanish transition to democracy and some collective hijackings of history after the 15M movement
This article studies the imaginaries of political change available during the Spanish transition to democracy (1973–1982) and their new political usages by the Spanish 15M Occupy movement in the context of the 2008–2014 economic crisis. I argue that protesters are now rediscovering the old symbols used against Franco’s dictatorship and adapting them to the new political circumstances, through graffiti, slogans, artistic performances and other eph…
The cannibal wave
This article analyses how hunger and guillotines, revolution and food, butchers and protests are connected in the Spanish collective imaginary during the current temporality of crisis (2008–2013), with the aim of establishing its cultural grammar. By examining different representations of the crisis by means of gastronomy – including examples of graffiti and slogans, cooking TV shows and horror movies – I will describe the existing tensions betwe…
Dynamiting Don Quijote
This paper analyzes the effects of the commemorative cycle of the tercentenary of Don Quijote (1905–1915) in the context of the crisis of the Spanish Restoration (1917–1923). Literary figures such as Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Rafael Cansinos Assens, and Manuel Azaña understood this cycle as the symbolic response of Alphonsine culture to the "Disaster of '98." These writers used Quixotist material in the work that they published at the very beginnin…
