The artefacts recovered by the French-Argentine Mission to Aksha (Serra West, Lower Nubia, 1961-1963) which are currently housed in the Museo de La Plata, include a series of vessels found in local funerary contexts but originally imported from Egypt. These belonged to burials from the so-called A-Group (3800–2900 BC), which encompasses a number of Nubian communities contemporary with the processes of state formation and expansion in the Nile Val…

Seeing Perfection. Ancient Egyptian Images beyond Representation, de Rune Nyord
Bringing the desert to the Nile
This article draws attention to an artefact in the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada, that has thus far received little attention despite having been in their archive for nearly a century. The object (ROM 900.2.45) is a heavily reconstructed ter-racotta rectangular-based model with openings to one side and on top. Painted and incised figures decorate the sides of the object. This paper presents a fresh approach regarding this particular artefact by …

Hippopotamus hunting in Predynastic Egypt
Hippopotamus hunting as an iconographical motif is widely attested during most of Egyptian history. Both private and royal Egyptian tombs spanning from early Old Kingdom to Roman times show these images in their walls. The motif was often depicted in Predynastic iconography but, due to some of its particularities, some authors suggested that hippopotami were, in fact, not killed but rather captured alive. Decades have passed, and evidence both ar…
