Learning to work
Purpose This study examines the relationship between curricular university internships and labour market outcomes for university graduates in Spain. It investigates both short- and long-term associations across two graduate cohorts. Design/methodology/approach The analysis draws on microdata from two cohorts (2014 and 2010) of the Spanish University Graduate Job Placement Survey. Linear probability models are estimated to assess the relationship …
Modular 3-D-Printed Education Tool for Blind and Visually Impaired Students Oriented to Net Structures
Contribution: This article presents the design, creation, testing, and results after the use of a 3-D-printed educational tool that helped a blind student learning electric circuits theory in higher education. Background: Educational tools oriented to visually impaired and blind students in higher education are limited or even nonexistent in the STEM area. Previous developments on the field present in the literature, including other 3-D printing …
Demographic and clinical characteristics of deaths associated with influenza A(H1N1) pdm09 in Central America and Dominican Republic 2009–2010
The pandemic killed young adults, pregnant women and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Most sought care too late to fully benefit from oseltamivir. We recommend countries review antiviral treatment policies for people at high risk of developing complications
Innovating nutrition education. Promoting food appreciation and nutrition to school-aged children at an international sporting event
Local understanding of an HIV vaccine and its relationship with HIV-related stigma in the Dominican Republic
The purpose of this study was to explore local perceptions and experiences regarding vaccines in general and HIV vaccines and vaccine trials in the Dominican Republic. In-depth interviews were carried out with 25 participants representing two study groups: (1) individuals considered at high risk for HIV infection including female sex workers and male STI clinic attendees and (2) individuals considered at low risk of HIV infection including women …
Digital signal processors for a signal processing laboratory
An undergraduate level laboratory course on digital signal processors and their use in real-time digital signal processing (DSP) systems is described. Special emphasis is put on some practical issues such as execution time optimization, finite wordlength effects and a pipelined strategy as a suitable way to improve the performance of a real-time DSP system. The primary purpose of the laboratory is a better understanding of the theoretical concept…
Floppy disk controllers for a computer architecture course
A set of laboratory experiments interfacing floppy disk drives with 8 bit and 16 bit microprocessors is presented. The experiments have been carried out with the aim of improving the student's understanding of the internal working of drives and local input-output communication methods. Enough detail is provided to duplicate parts of the experiments. >
